No, it turned out it wasn't the hard drive. Its weird though because I got an error that lead me to believe it was the hard drive and I had video for a few reboots but then the video went but the error dissapeared.

Instant death of a hard drive is likely due to a component failure on the controller board bolted to the drive. The media itself is probably fine, although a replacement controller might need to re-learn some tuned parameters before it can reliably talk to the media.
