Re: New Computer

^^ Is that a joke? No, Intel has lead the way with their C2D and until AMD releases something better that won't change. I'm not an Intel fan boy, I always buy whats best at the time, I had AMD, currently I have Intel.

Re: New Computer

Any sort of massively generalized statement about what to buy is going to be wrong given the right circumstances. Always specify as much as possible.

If you are referring to the new stepping about to be released, we will know shortly, and of course as soon as someone hears, they will post it here.

Im not really on a tight budget, if I want to spend more I just have to wait a little bit longer to make some more money :P

True but in almost every benchmark out there the C2D chips perform on average better in most programs and games. I didn't go into great detail as the person before me didn't. I have seen some benchmarks where the upper end Phenoms put up similar FPS in games to the duos and quads from intel. However in most every other application the intels out perform AMD. I'm by no means a fan boy and people are free to do their own research, I'm just going on what I have seen personally. AMD's chips are not a bad choice, they will do the trick and if the price is right can be the better deal sometimes. To each their own.

Re: New Computer

What about OS's? Should I be getting vista or sticking to XP? Right now im leaning towards XP just because of some of the things I have heard about vista/performance/all the games I like run on XP.

Re: New Computer

We have talked about Vista64 a lot here in this forum, so google it and you should find a couple of threads were we discuss it at length.

Yes you might loose a few FPS in some old games, but considering the rig you are looking at building, you won't notice. For instance, BF2 is limited to 100FPS. You computer will run it at that with all on max, with either XP or Vista, so you don't need to worry about performance hit. Not sure what other games you play, but you will still have very high FPS in the game.

I am very happy with vista 64, and am glad I went with it. So are a lot of other people here. It does require you to be a little more observant about checking out a program before you download it, like looking at the system requirement page or the FAQ. Usually just a quick search of a program's site will answer your question.

I have actually only found a few programs that I had problems with, but they have since been fixed. And even if a site doesn't say it is for Vista64, most programs still work fine.

It came down for me to whether I wanted to buy XP when I built my rig in Oct., and then have to buy Vista a year or so later when I wanted the features. I decided not to waste the money on XP and just get Vista.

Lot of other people here are happy with sticking to XP, and I still run it on my old computer my wife is now using. And yes some people have problems with BF2, though most get worked out by things like running as admin and other tweaks.

Re: New Computer

Steamers, did you read the whole thread?

In like 2 weeks Nivida's new top dog will be out and it should beat the GTX2.

The X2 is not the best option.

Why? Kernel and driver code will execute with the greater number of 64 bit registers, and 32-bit code in the app will continue to run at its full speed.

Re: New Computer

From all the reviews I have seen, most game produced up till now get a few extra FPS in benchmarks out of XP than they do in Vista.
In some very recently released games, Vista and XP score pretty much even. And I am hoping that games out later this year like ARMA2 are going to flip that and have Vista scoring higher than XP. I would love that if just for the fact that people will shut up their whining about Vista for at least that reason.
This article is one of the ones that gets my hopes up:

Re: New Computer

I don't see why people complain about Vista, I have my school notebook with Vista Home on and it runs like a dream. My NES emulators and DOS emulators work wonders with it, I think Vista is a nice OS for notebooks at least.

Re: New Computer

It was probably blue screening because of a hardware driver. Yes, some hardware companies still haven't fixed their drivers, but so far I have only blue screened because of Nvidia's drivers. It would do it 3-4 times a week while in game. Some new ones came out and I updated and no more blue screen.

Was your friend installing on a new system or upgrading from XP?
If you are buying all new parts for your computer, you shouldn't have a problem. Even Creative has finally got decent drivers out. They were a big part of the Vista hate problem. Everyone just bitches about vista, when they should have been complaining in Creative's forums.
