This isn't a big ticket item, but you guys are so smart so I thought I'd ask. I need a usb flash drive to hold contract documents, passwords and bookmarks. What should I be looking for other than memory size and price? Are there any that are designed for confidential information?

Hey man I did a little looking around for encrypted drives, I dont know how much space your looking for but here are some with 256 bit AES Encryption. That should protect your docs pretty well. Try to stick with names you know such as Kingston, Corsair, SanDisk, and such.

Lexar makes a secure drive which allows for password access mode(cant remember the name just check there website) it comes in all sizes and is moderatly priced i had one for awhile then i lost it somewhere ... problemly under the couch or in my car... anyway there one option but overall for flash drives i recommend the PNY Attache series i dont know if theres a secure one but this little buggers just keep on going i have 3 of them 2 1GB and 1 2GB and there frickin indestructible one has no case but still works one got crushed in a door (dont ask) still works they have survived washer and dryer. with no data lost if i didnt need them id take one and run it over just to see if it would die.

I have the Sandisk Cruzer Titanium. It died on me a few months after bending it sideways while it was plugged in. I didn't have a reciept and never did any registering but Sandisk took it back after logging a support ticket through the website. In the end, I got a new Cruzer Titanium that is the same capacity, smaller physical size and no hassle with support.

You might not necessarily need a rugged flash drive but there are high capacity drives that are really cheap. For encryption, try TrueCrypt (free).

I have a Kingston secure thingy and it appears to be very sturdy and came with security software that I don't use.
You should put a hidden file on that stick where you have an encrypted file system.

These days customs officials can search your memory sticks for interesting information, and you want something for them to search. Your contracts and passwords are safe in the hidden location.

I have never done that though.

I second TrueCrypt. The only way to go. Much much better encryption options than any of the standard thumb drive offerings.

Truecrypt seems to have a limitation. I want to be able to be able to use an encryption program on my flash drive where ever I go. Having admin privileges isn't always possible. Is there another app that someone can recommend. I looked at BartPE and it looks like alot more then I'm interested in.


TrueCrypt can run in so-called 'traveler' mode, which means that it does not have to be installed on the operating system under which it is run. However, there are two things to keep in mind:

* You need administrator privileges in order to able to run TrueCrypt in 'traveler' mode.
* After examining the registry file, it may be possible to tell that TrueCrypt was run (and that a TrueCrypt volume was mounted) on a Windows system even if it is run in traveler mode.

If you need to solve these problems, we recommend using BartPE for this purpose. For further information on BartPE, see the question “Is it possible to use TrueCrypt without leaving any 'traces' on Windows?"

At one point I thought hidden partitions were the way to go to hide data, but forensics specialists know all about that now, so don't bother. The only question is whether the customs guys on the front line (say, the guys looking at your laptop in China as you get off the plane to see the Olympics) have been informed of these hiding spots.

About the only good place left to hide stuff is in the low bits of your media, using steganography. And there are now attempts to detect whether such data is present using statistical methods.

There are actually little programs you can put on a thumbdrive so that it asks for a password before you can see what is on it. I think it will even throw up a message on how to return the drive to you if someone gets the password wrong. Message would say like your phone # and address.

What you could do is use that auto launcher to launch My Lockbox, which requires you to enter a password before you can see and open files. I use My Lockbox, and it works well.

Do any of those apps have a "phone home" option?

That would be pretty cool to have. Flag it as lost in the central system, so when it gets plugged in to a device and checks in with the Master Server, it sees that it's stolen, and can transmit location information loosely based on WAN IP.

I hope no one was seriously suggesting we put a GPS chip in them, for pinpointing?
