Re: What Chipset for LGA775 Platform?

I don't have time to check the link Acreo, but are you sure about that? My understanding from the ASUS support tech a couple weeks ago said that in order to have ExpressGate, you had to have the chip on the board. That is where the OS resides. It isn't anything on the harddrive at all.
If it was just a harddrive thing I would have turned it on as well. I actually was calling the tech support to find out when they were updating the p35 BIOS with the feature.

According to that user, if you're looking for Linux pre-installed onto a solid-state memory module on the motherboard itself, you will need to get the P5Q Deluxe edition.

Otherwise, the P5Q and the P5Q Pro requires Linux be installed onto a partition of your hard drive. (Although I was already assuming that.)
Hey Acreo, thx for the heads up... I checked ASUS ' site and you 're 100% correct. The Deluxe and Premium boards (the more expensive ones) are the only ones with a flash drive onboard. You can check it here. They call it "ASUS Express Gate SSD".

... suddenly makes the ASUS boards less appealing, it 's 50€ extra.

I personally have better experience with GA boards, memory wise that is. Last ASUS board I bought for a friend had me going back to the shop for different memory twice.

Express Gate only works in SATA-IDE mode. It does _not_ work in RAID or AHCI mode.
and from ASUS ' site:

Quote:
ASUS Express Gate
5 Secs Bootup to online
Taking only 5 seconds to go online from bootup, Express Gate is the one-stop gateway to instant fun! It´s a unique motherboard built-in OS. You can utilize the most popular Instant Messengers (IM) like MSN, Skype, Google talk, QQ, and Yahoo! Messenger to keep in touch with friends, or quickly check on the weather and e-mails just before leaving your house. What´s more, the user-friendly picture manager lets you view your pictures without entering Windows at anytime!

* The actual boot time is subject to hardware configurations and product models
They don't mention anything about the light or SSD version in their overview of features... makes me wanna grab a GA board straight away.

Re: What Chipset for LGA775 Platform?

For the record, I've had some problems with Asus boards in the past but my only beef with the one I have now is that it won't let me crank my RAM voltages up above 1.95 volts. This means that even though my RAM will easily do 4-4-4-12 @215x14, I can't get it to run stable because I can't feed enough power to the memory. A right pain in the ass, I tell you.

Buckets, are you running the most up to date BIOS?

Also, just found this was posted yesterday
ands-On With the Eee Box’s ExpressGate Instant-On OS

Has a video review. I am disappointed that the lower end ASUS boards don't come with it all hooked up like I thought.

Yeah, I am. my board (the M2N-E) actually uses the same chipset as the M2N-SLI and I've heard that you can trick some program into flashing that boards BIOS into this one to unlock higher voltages. I just don't have the balls to do it. Asus limited the overclocking options on this board because it wasn't supposed to be an enthusiast part.

Re: What Chipset for LGA775 Platform?

That feature looks nice on paper, but I don't really have a need for it.

If I'm going to be in Linux, I might as well have a more full blown version instead of a stripped down version only really good for web surfing.

If the whole ExpressGate feature isn't that important to you, the P5Q series is still a really good board.

Flashing a ASUS board is probably the easiest experience I've ever had. Port and plug placements tend to be better than other boards (especially GA's mATX boards).

Another thing I love is the inclusion of the "Q-Connector" for those front panel 2-3 pin connectors. This seems becoming standard for several of the mid-range and high-end ASUS boards. Saves you some pain when you connect the FP connectors last.

With whatever board you get, take a good look at where everything is placed. It'll save you headaches when it comes time to putting it all together.

Take special note of the ATX 12V main connector and the 4/8-pin CPU connector if you go Intel. These can have some weird placements on some boards that make it a pain when you have cases where the PSU is at the bottom.

Re: What Chipset for LGA775 Platform?

Well, I went with the ASUS P5Q Pro and the Q9450, I just couldn't bring up the extra 50€ for the ExpressGate feature. GA boards are not for sale in the cheap shop in my town so that 's the only reason I didn't buy the DS3R .

Thx for the input all, should be up and running by tomorrow .

MAN that looks good G.D.
What Gfx card are you going to be running with it? Going to take a really good one to keep up with that CPU.
Lets us know how it all works out.

8800GT.

Just found out that the case I took from work (HP D530) has a custom backplate system and a custom frontpanel connector for the LEDs and power button . Won't be able to build until tuesday because monday is a frikin holliday... just my luck.

Think I 'll get this case, it 's cheap and looks okay:

ANTEC Three Hundred Ultimate Gamer Case

I 'll let you know how it runs once it 's up .

Re: What Chipset for LGA775 Platform?

Actually, another guy here has spent a lot of time looking at that case and we talked about it a lot. Make sure you read through the links I posted to see if it is the right case for you, as it is a bit small.

We talk a lot about it all through the thread

Re: What Chipset for LGA775 Platform?

Thx for the link Bamboo, I haven't made up my mind yet but I really like the looks and price... I have till tuesday to decide so plenty of time to look for alternatives.

I 'm thinking about running RAID 0, I know the increase in gaming performance is negligible but overal it should speed up the system and I have plenty of HD 's. My second pc will be running RAID 1 for data storage and HTPC so I won't have to worry about losing data.

If anyone has a suggestion for a case, I don't want a full tower but a big mid tower will do. No LED 's inside or gamer look, plane and simple is what I 'm looking for.

Thx
