I would like to run 98 and Vista.

Yes you read correctly I would like to run both of these operating systems when I need to.

I want my vista for everything I do now. I have it in my pc now.

But I need to run 98. Can I just buy an external hardrive and put 98 on it? Is it that easy? Or can someone please direct me to something to read up on even if it is that easy lol.

If you want to know why I want 98 its because of an pld program that will only run on that OS. I know i will only run on it. Nothing to do with gaming.

Re: I would like to run 98 and Vista.

Not to sound critical, but couldn't you find a PLD program for Linux instead of Windows 98?

For the most part, you should be able to run both OSes as long as you have two partitions (one for each OS).

As far as dual-booting, you'd have to ask someone else. I usually use the dual-booting programs that come with some flavors of Linux to dual-boot Windows and Linux on my machines.

you can just load vista first then reload 98 on a separate drive, make sure its a separate drive, not your vista partition.

Re: I would like to run 98 and Vista.

no point in getting an external, for one it would run slower and im not sure if your pc would allow you to boot from a external. your best bet is to just load your 98 disk and create a small 10gig partition and put it on there.

One word, Virtualbox.

Why reboot if you don't need to.

Run it as a virtual machine under Vista. '98 resource requirements are a pittance.

VirtualPC can be downloaded for free from MS' download site.

Virtualbox is a program that you install and then create a virtual machine where you can then install another OS like 98. At work, I use Windows XP x64 as my desktop. I then run Virtualbox so that I can test my software under 98, ME, NT4, XP x32, Vista, etc. Its like having a PC within a PC. No need for rebooting, just run it when you need it.

Re: I would like to run 98 and Vista.

did you try installing and running said application under compatibility mode? ive had good success with windows vistas compatibility mode just install the application and then right click the icon for the application select compatibly and choose run in compatibly mode for - win98

VMware is a another program like virtual box i like it more but the down side is you have to buy it

i find when setting up dual OSes its easier to install a second HardDrive and have each OS to its own Hard drive in the machine.
