Usually also the more expensive you go, the more tweaking options you are going to have in the BIOS. The Maximus you were considering for instance is probably going to have way more than the $129 one, because it is the hard core gamer/overclocker board.
Sorry for the slight thread-jack, but what does this do exactly Bamboo?

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

It works the same as a wireless router you would go out and buy from like Linksys or Netgear. So by buying that board, I now have wi-fi for my laptop and possible future Iphone without spending an extra $60 or so on an external router.

Like this one:

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

Left with a couple questions, but I'll ask those later, I'm gonna be opening a Router thread later because I have no idea how they work, what I need to loom for, or even if I should get it.

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

It says in the article final comments, in the layout score
"CPU socket area is ready for any size cooler"

IC.. interestingly - that was the article that wouldn't display for me earlier.

Anyway.. I dunno.. They should probably qualify that statement somehow. My Zalman barely clears the bridge with the low/old style heatsinks, and before that I had a cpu heatsink (CoolerMaster?) that wouldn't clear the capacitors and they didn't have any heat sinks at all.

But I still like it.

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

Can't find my post from the other day about memory, but here are some really top notch choices at good prices:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146726

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146785

I still can't believe how cheap memory is, especially this kit:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145197

That is an amazing price on top of the line ram with a cooler.

What ever you choose, spend a bit of time and look to make sure it will work on your board. I am about 99% sure the corsair will, since I am running the p35 version of that board and a version of that memory as well.

But should always double check.

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

In desperate need of a valid reason to make a monstrous gaming rig I have decided that since I am self employed / private consultant that I can write off whatever I spend on a computer as a work related expense -- I do spend my entire work day at the computer writing and researching and etc etc, soooo thats valid! YEAAA!!!!

So with my weak defense behind me, here is what I've purchased for my new rig:

CASE: Antec P182
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129025

PSU: Antec TP3-650W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371001

MOBO: ASUS P5Q-Deluxe
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...tCode=10008662

MEM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145197

PROC: Intel Q9450
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0287628

HEAT SINK: Sun-Beam Core Contact Freezer (and Arctic Silver 5 of course)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835207004

FAN: Scythe S-Flex 120
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835185004

HDD: WD 7500AAKS
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136131

The only hardware that remains to be selected is the graphics card.
I'm torn between grabbing an asus 4850 or the 4870.... or maybe 2 4850s? Gahhhh.. must not spend moar monies!

PS, does anyone have a legal copy of vista 64 business (or ultimate or whatever the hell the better version is called) they'd be willing to part with? I've gone too deep into the rabbit hole and I've got few green pills left in my wallet

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

You could always go for a 4850 now and an OEM of Vista, for a total of around $300. Then upgrade later, and sell the 4850 or get another one.

Has anyone else heard anything about being able to run a 4850 and 4870 together in Crossfire? I know there was a lot of talk about that being possible when they first came out. Maybe you could contact a tech site or ATI directly and ask.

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

What size is the monitor? The 4850 is a solid choice but if you are gaming on a 24" you might want to consider the 4870?

You shouldn't be. Newegg sells most of their stuff at single unit wholesale, their only margin being whatever they make by bulk ordering. That rebate is awful nice though.
