I'm sorry I had to say this: I've got Windows 95, 98 and 2000 laying around, want them? lol lol. The best version of Vista is Windows Vista Ultimate. 64 or 32 bit? That's up to you to read this the other guy's replys, visit the links and try and make sense out of all this. 64 bit might be better from what I've read.

This is debatable.

Look at Vista's officlal website and see which version fits you best Switch.

There are some features in ultimate that require a special onboard chip that most motherboards do not carry. So tread carefully if you find you want to use hard drive encryption.

It is only debatable if you spend your time replying to Mr. Fighter.

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

NO HARD DRIVE ENCRYPTION!

Last time I did that I encrypted naked pictures of my ex gf, then I couldn't open them later after I reinstalled my OS

Sad sad history with hard drive encryption.

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

Well, Ultimate has hard drive encryption but it requires a special chip on your motherboard.

I had a very hard time find a motherboard that had the required chip and even then it didn't have the features I wanted.

But it does offer file encryption (just like XP Pro) (also available in Business version). I overlooked that when I bought Home Premium. I had thought it had built-in file encryption like XP Pro did. Unfortunately it didn't so I lost a bunch of encrypted files and had to restore from a months-out-of-date backup.

If you still have access to a valid student card, you should be able to get an academically priced version of Vista dirt cheap (~$65 for home premium, ~80 for business).

Usually the bookstore of whatever campus you're on. If you're not near a campus, there are also a few online outlets, but you'll have to trust them enough to fax them a photocopy of your dated (& valid) student card and valid photo id. I can't speak too much about these online places as I'm from Canada eh. Google around for academic pricing and you'll find quite a few.

Here's information on the program:
http://www.microsoft.com/education/U...icPricing.mspx

The prices quoted on the MS page seem high. I got my copy of Vista business for $88 CA.

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

Here are a couple articles for you.

http://cybernetnews.com/2008/01/06/m...ding-to-vista/

Purchasing Vista and Office at Discounted Prices

You may have to jump through a few hoops, like JAM said, but you can save a few bucks.
I was actually employed by a university when I bought Vista, but didn't feel like messing with the program and just paid the $99 for the OEM from Newegg.

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

I haven't built it yet -- I'm waiting on the HD 4950 to show up on monday -- and I still need to get the OS -- I have 2 copies of XP Pro 32bit but I'd like to make it vista 64bit system so I can use all 4GB of ram ontop of the 512 of the video card. I'm trying to find an inexpensive way to get a legal vista copy, I'd hate to pay alot for it with 2 keys for XP pro in my pocket. The problem is I want vista ultimate and not the regular homey version because i'm used to having better networking and remote access features from xp pro

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

If money is tight right now man, go with the XP pro. Then in a few months throw down the $200 for Ultimate OEM. I have a feeling the edu. discount is usually just for Home version though.

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

Hmm, don't know if this is the same for other universities, but here at DePaul, we get our software through MSDNAA (or was it MSNDAA?) and we only have Vista Business Edition available to us. We don't get Ultimate, Home Premium, or the other flavors of Vista.
