Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

Looks like the cheapest you're going to get it for is about $180.00.

I've been really happy with Home Premium but if that won't suit your needs, I guess you're out of luck.

Interesting idea. I wonder what the local community college charges to sign up for some minimal course load just to get a student card, and whether the bookstore there has Ultimate 64-bit?

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

Bad news bears:

8 pin 12v mobo power is not long enough for the case!!!
Antec psu in an antec case -- I sent antec a letter, lets see if they send me an extension cable for it.

Also also
Onboard passive cooling prevents the use of the fan that comes with the cpu cooler. Not sure if it matters as there are 2 case fans within 2 inches, one back fan and one chimney.

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

If not and you can return it, get the Corsair 620 I am using in my p182. It is long enough and even long enough to route the cables behind the motherboard for the clean look.

How are other parts of the install going?

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

The heat sink was a bit of a pain to get in, but its on there after a bit of effort. The fan does not fit because of the passive mobo cooler on the NoBridge / So Bridge etc. I'm not sure how that will do. The mobo warns that failure to use the cpu fan power will cause errors -- but right now I have no fan that can connect to the 4 pin -- not sure what to do about that.

Routing wires behind the mobo is keeping the case looking very very clean, I'm happy about that, so sick of the mess that is my current build.

I removed the central hard drive guides and am using the center cage as an air duct with 2 extra 120s. The front case fan I added is the super silen scyth 120. The central fan is the one that came with my aftermarket heat sink -- I don't know how loud that will be. Can't do anything with this build until I get an 8pin 12v extension.

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

Everything is up and running now....

I returned my mobo and got another one, install was fine from there on out... I didn't update the bios this time, I suspect that may have been the cause of my problems.

Vista installed after a day I had all my updates.

I installed arma and patched up to the current version. Now I can run it smooth as butter with 8000m view distance on high-ish settings (I didn't max it out, I just let it pick the settings and upped the view distance, still looks nice, I'll try maxing it later)

I haven't installed the my Xfi gamer yet, I'm running off of on board audio which is full of static and noise.... yuck -- that may be addressed in the future with new drivers or perhaps a bios update would improve the on board audio clarity (but I'm afraid to update the bios due to my initial problems)...

Anywho, the system runs great with Vista Ultimate -- everything looks nice n'pretty... I like the video desktop feature, have a nice little water fall going on.

Still working out a few kinks --- going into 'sleep mode/low power mode' never works, the computer doesn't recover and when I reboot my bio settings are cleared (clock and all) Perhaps that is also fixed with a bios update, not sure. Any thoughts?

Re: Switch's New 'Puter:

Glad to hear you got it up and running again.

As for the onboard audio, make sure you update the drivers (can be done through Windows Update).

I haven't had a problem with the onboard audio and even like it better than my ancient Audigy 1.

Ok..What MB did you get... I have the same case and an Antec PS sitting in my office waiting for a New MB but I was afraid of the Power cable deal... Did you get a new Model board with the Power connectors closer or an extension or what??

Thanks!
