Re: Google Browser "Chrome"

I downloaded it and tested it with our website.

No real big difference in speed compared to firefox or IE7. We don't use tons of javascript though.

It does render the site better than firefox and no different from IE7 that I can tell.

I don't know if speed will remain great. Firefox amazed me when I first installed it. Then I started installing addons and such and it slowed down to be only slightly faster than IE7.

Yea, it is clean. I don't like clean. Clean means everything is hidden and I can't see it. Or it has been thrown away. Just my preference.

I keep waiting for someone to say something interesting about chrome but it never happens. It's like listening to Rush Limbaugh.

Re: Google Browser "Chrome"

I forget about adblock because it works so well... I don't even realize I am not getting ads until I go to a website in IE.

Talking Re: Google Browser "Chrome"

I find it hard to locate things I use everyday like Favorites. I had to search all over and finally found them on the right side under imports. I could get used to it but haven't decided to make it my only browser yet.

One word... greasemonkey. If it supports this little gem, then I will entertain it as a possibility. Until then I'll stick with ff.

Re: Google Browser "Chrome"

At a glance the initial impressions don't really wow me. With all the add ins and extensions for Firefox there really is no reason to jump ship right now. Chrome doesn't really come with anything that made me say I need to use this. A few changes here and there but over all I'm not impressed with it compared to Firefox.

That said, I don't know who's thinking the speed is better but if you use the back button, it actually reloads the page instead of taking it from cache so it can be slower. Also the search functionality disappears if you change a page so I keeping having to hit Ctrl F every time I change pages when I'm trying to find something. Those are a couple things I noticed right out of the gate.

These are things that can and probably will be fixed, but as I said compared to Firefox there's no reason to use it right now.

Re: Google Browser "Chrome"

As I said before, I like the browser, it is slick with what you can do. My only issue so far is scrolling with my wheel on my mouse. I cannot find a setting that adjusts it. For some reason I can scroll down, but not up?! It is really odd since I have never had this issue before with any program..

Re: Google Browser "Chrome"

I haven't used Chrome yet, but the report that it uses separate processes for each tab is a big argument in its favor. I like to load a dozen or more TG threads from the New Posts results in separate tabs, then read them one by one. I hate that FF gets laggy on one tab while another is loading. Just switching to another tab takes seconds sometimes.

Re: Google Browser "Chrome"

I've been using Chrome for a few days now. It lacks a few plugins that I use in FF, but the browser itself is very nice. It has a minimalistic approach but still offers quite a few interesting features. It also is quite a bit faster than FF or IE.

I'm sure a future update will allow for addons and let devs create new features. At that point I imagine I'll be making the move to Chrome as my primary browser.

Re: Google Browser "Chrome"

I downloaded it, and set up Privoxy as well...

I've used it for about an hour collectively so far, and I have to say... I like it! The one thing I immediately noticed is that it's very noticeably snappier than FFX.

Re: Google Browser "Chrome"

Hmm, I went and installed it in the super slow machine upstairs to replace Firefox and IE.

It loads faster than the two.

Some other things I liked (after using it more):
  • The downloads appear at the bottom of the window (like the Download Statusbar addon)
  • The address bar is also automatically a search bar. I don't have to type "g:" in front of a search like in Firefox.
  • I actually spent a few hours and had about 34 tabs open (2 were flash videos) and Chrome eats less memory than even Firefox does.
  • Password manager (similar to Firefox 3's)
  • Ease of access to page options and browser options (via the dropdowns in the upper right)
  • The "File..." click menus are hidden like in IE7.
  • There's a new tab "tab" button (again copied from IE7).
What I didn't like:
  • It seems to eat processing power when you have many tabs open and loading but want to switch quickly back and forth between tabs.
  • No "Save" button in the browser options.
  • I couldn't find "File..." or any of the other ones.
  • CTRL + F (Find Function) brings up a very simple page search bar under the tabs in the upper right. Unfortunately, it fades every time I load a new page or switch pages. This forces me to use the keyboard shortcut again and again. Very annoying.
  • Google Web Installer. I hated this type of installer for several Microsoft products and I hate that Google implements this. I can't have a full package software within a .EXE to move from system to system. I gotta eat bandwidth everytime I need to reinstall the browser or install it on other systems.
  • No addons (like FF) and no official community page I could find.

Overall, I'm beginning to take back my words about not switching from FF3. If they can fix and few things and expand on others, then I may just switch from FF3.
