Re: Firefox Lies.

I forgot to mention that yesterday one of the tabs had a flash video (about 20 mins. long) loaded, so that also added to the memory usage a little bit).

Here's why I have so many tabs open:

I watch some TV shows so that takes up 2 tabs usually.

I'm considering purchasing some very nice fonts, and have all the ones I'm looking at open as sort of a "reminder".

I have GOG.com open since I have two games with them and am waiting for them to add more titles (like Diablo 2).

I have been looking at eReader devices again lately and look at eBooks, their pricing, the availability of some sci-fi novels, etc.

One of the Amazon tabs also has the current lowest pricing on a Microsoft keyboard I want to buy.

About another 10 tabs or so are dedicated to 2 websites that I manage and a few hosting company forums that I moderate.

Rest are recipes, email, Ikariam, TG's forums, and game resource websites.

Re: Firefox Lies.

Try opening 30 windows or tabs of your other favorite browsers.

Re: Firefox Lies.

Not to sound mean but have you not heard of bookmarks?

I can't keep track of that much information all at once while watching TV. If I'm researching, I may have a few tabs open for cross reference. If Im watching streaming video, I watch it.

I don't understand how you could have so much on the go all at once that couldn't be handled via an RSS feed or bookmarks.

Again this is more of a devils advocate remark not a personal attack Either way your a busy man, perhaps I'm to simple to grasp your world

Re: Firefox Lies.

A bookmark requires a complete reload of a page, including transferring the data and recomputing the rendering, plus possibly a login and a jump to one or more forum thread pages.

A tab just requires a repaint, which just means running down a list of GUI elements (font glyphs, rectangles, bitmaps) that have been revealed. It's significantly less costly to switch between tabs than between bookmarks.

IE, BTW, gets a special advantage in these competitions: Most of its code also powers Windows Explorer, including the desktop. So its code is already in memory, shared between folders, the desktop, and every browser tab. Firefox and other 3rd party browsers don't get that free ride. Their memory usage is counted separately.

Re: Firefox Lies.

My point was more that regardless of how optimal tabs are, how in the heck does a person have so much information/entertainment on the go at once and keep track of it!?!

Thanks though for informing me on the tabs vs. bookmark and how it's processed.

Re: Firefox Lies.

That's just how I manage things. My brain works a little differently.

As for bookmarks...I have way too many already. I've got about 50 bookmark folders with at least 2 subfolders each and with about 10-80 bookmarks.

One would think that after I close a browser tab, that Windows (or Firefox) would clean out the memory.

Re: Firefox Lies.

I opened all the TG threads today I was planning to read and ended up with 59 tabs. (There were almost 200 threads with new posts at the time.) I'm probably about 2/3 of the way done with them now.
