Re: 8800gs combo
The 9600GSO is also a good inch (and some) longer than a 8800GT. It's not exactly the most ideal card to put in a cramped case. Or in my friend's build, a mATX without a removable hard drive bay.

Re: 8800gs combo
Are you sure it is larger than the 8800gt? Being that it is based on the same production, it should be the same size.
Perhaps you meant 9600gt?
EDIT: after a quick look it appears they are all around the same size, ~8-9 inches. Varying on cooler used and difference in pcb(yes 2 of the same name cards may have different layout and components).Last edited by Namebot; 09-27-2008 at 07:26 PM.

Re: 8800gs combo
I'm sure, have a look at Newegg, like this one. You can also call up eVGA (or BFG Tech) and ask for the length for a 8800GT and a 9600GSO (or GT).
Remember that the GSO is just a slightly hampered version of the GT.
All of the 9000 series cards are about the same length (variances are a small fraction of an inch) and all of them are longer than the 8800GT/GS.Acreo Aeneas

Re: 8800gs combo
The point about the 9600gso(8800gs) being a cut down 8800gt is what I was saying above in regards to them being the same size. I don't think the card would get larger as they cut it down.
Checking the xfx website is what made me come to the conclusion that they are all close in size.
When checking dimensions I think it may be best to go on a case by case basis when concerning these models.|TG-12th| Namebot

Re: 8800gs combo
For the love of god...
9600GSO is a slightly stripped down version of the 9600GT. NOT a 8800GT, even though both cards are derivatives of the 8800 line.
The PCB on the 9600 (and above) is LONGER than that of the 8800s. If you don't bother calling up one of the companies and asking, then believe what you like.
I for one have thoroughly considered a 9600, 9800, 8800, and a 8600. I went and got length dimensions from several manufacturers of each card. Off the top of my head, the 8800GT is 9.6" and a 9600GT is 11".
Edit:
If you consider the 9500GT, 9400GT, or any of the lower models in the 9000 series, then those PCBs might be the same length (if not shorter) than the 8800GT (or GS). But I doubt they'll be shorter than a 8400GS.Acreo Aeneas

Re: 8800gs combo
Every review I have seen identifies the core of the 8800gs(the same thing as the 9600gso) as g92 the same as that in the 8800gt. Where as the 9600gt is g94. If the 9600gso was a cut down version of the 9600gt why would it(9600gso) have more shader units?
These are the links I used to come to the conclusion that the size varies between each individual product.
XFX 9600gt 9"
http://www.xfxforce.com/en-us/produc.../9600GT.aspx#2
XFX 9600gso 8.4"
http://www.xfxforce.com/en-us/produc...9600GSO.aspx#2
XFX 8800gt 8.5-9"
http://www.xfxforce.com/en-us/produc...a%20Dog.aspx#2
There are of course other manufacturers and I suspect that their cards will vary slightly depending on model.|TG-12th| Namebot

Re: 8800gs combo
It happens, but thanks to the argument (and my subsequent wrongness) I now can add the 9600GSO as a possibility for my friend's system.

Re: 8800gs combo
Another option to consider if you are going mid-low end is the 4670. Here are some tests of it aganist the 9600gso

Re: 8800gs combo
Indeed!
Similar performance, in a less power hungry package. No extra power connector required. Seems to be smaller as well. Certainly a card to keep an eye on for hot deals.
