Re: 8800gs combo

Good thing I didn't order the parts yet. I'll take a closer look into it tomorrow before I order the parts.
Thanks for the heads-up Bamboo!
...and the item got discontinued. Whenever you see a super-low price like that on NewEgg, they are selling out the last of their stock and going to discontinue the product.Acreo Aeneas

Re: 8800gs combo
ROFL. I have a XFX 8800GS I picked out that says "discontinued" and "Out of Stock", so I have no clue which one is right.
I ordered the parts yesterday, here they are:- Foxconn G31MX-K Motherboard
- Pentium Dual-Core E5200 Processor (45 nm)
- 2 GB Geil DDR2 800 RAM (1.9V, 5-5-5-15)
- PNY GeForce 9600GT Graphics Card (PCI-E 2.0, 512 MB)
- 80 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 HDD (SATA 3gbit/s)
- Samsung 22X DVD Burner (SATA)
- Rosewill Micro ATX Case (Black, -102 model)
- Corsair 450VX PSU (450W, 33A on +12V)
- 2 x 120mm Case Fans
- Sunbeam Fan Controller
The limit was about $500/600 since he wanted to save the other $500/600 for a nice projector and a new 22" monitor.
I ended up going with a 9600GT instead since it came with Frontline: Fuel of War and was $15 cheaper than the cheapest 9800GT/8800GT alternative.
Matt (my friend) basically will be using the system to play Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, Legendary, and to run Maya 8/9.
Since none of the games have official system requirements, I had to guess that what they might need to play at medium resolutions on a 22" LCD.
Blizzard is known to come out with games that will run on older systems, so D3 and SC2 can't be that taxing. Also, SC2 is supposed to be DX9, so the 9600GT should be more than enough.
Legendary is built using Oblivion's engine (with more static meshes and objects) and the 9600GT gets great fps @ 1680 x 1050 (50+), so it should be able to handle Legendary quite well when it releases later this year.Acreo Aeneas

Re: 8800gs combo
I think the 8800gs are gone for good and only the 9600gso(s) have a chance of coming back in stock.
I bet your friend will be pleased with that system.|TG-12th| Namebot

Re: 8800gs combo
Hopefully.
From our discussions, I might be building him new system every single year just so he can play the latest games.

Re: 8800gs combo
Ummm......wouldn't building a good higher end system that would last for about 3-4 years be way cheaper? Even if you went with a mid card and upgraded after 2 years, it would still be cheaper. $600 every year adds up quite a bit.
