Re: SSD drives in the news
Yeah the Indilinx Drives are able to compete now, Intel drives are still top dog but Indilinx isn't too far behind. A good second place with lower cost.

Re: SSD drives in the news
I've recently seen articles (none at hand of course) about Samsung's 32nm flash chips being slow and that they are working on a new controller. I might have it mixed up a little bit but I do know that they were having issues with it, which is not good news for cheaper prices on SSDs.

Re: SSD drives in the news
Some good news out today:
Intel's SSD Toolbox, firmware update promise boost in performance
That was just posted today, and turns out some OCZ and SuperTalent just recently put their trim firmware up. Of course you have to have Win7 running as well, but it looks like it really works well.
Just posted on AnandTech is a complete review of what TRIM does for the Intel drive, and it looks good:
The SSD Improv: Intel & Indilinx get TRIM, Kingston Brings Intel Down to $115
Also in that article he mentions that Kingston is about to release a drive that is pretty much an Intel drive with Kingston name on it, but it will only be 40gigs. But, it will only cost about $100!!! They review it, and it is slightly slower than the bigger intel drives, but way cheaper. It is meant just for your OS, and maybe 1 game. Might be a good option for some.
He also mentions some things about the 3rd gen of the intel drives, which has me groaning. I wonder what month they will release. But he does finish with this:
I have been checking Newegg everyday for the price to get back to normal, but it is still way inflatedI still firmly believe that an SSD is the single best performance improvement you can buy for your system today. Would I recommend waiting until next year to buy? This is one of the rare cases where I'd have to answer no. I made the switch last year and I wouldn't go back, it really does change the way your PC behaves.

Re: SSD drives in the news
Yeah thanks for the heads up on this. I've been keeping my eye out for that TRIM firmware update. I'm about to go flash it here in a minute.
That's unbelievable that Newegg still can't keep them in stock even at that inflated price. It seems like a bargain at $289 compared to what they had them at before.
If anyone wants to upgrade their system, I highly recommend looking into one of these SSD drives. Christmas gift anyone?|TG-12th| jmaker

Re: SSD drives in the news
I have been waiting for increased capacity to go with these improvements. I wasn't going to purchase Win7 but this would make me change my mind.
I'd like to start with at least 320gb and consider raiding the drives. I would like to put all my programs on these drives and maintain my others as data and backup.

Re: SSD drives in the news
Right now Kingston ssd's are not supporting TRIM (supported by Win 7) and will not update their ssd's with a flash but The new ones will at a later date. Ocz on the other hand will have flash updates for TRIM. I called Kingston support today just to be sure, I am bummed.

Re: SSD drives in the news
Kind of a funny interesting article showing some of the stuff intel ssd drives and handle and still work. Looks to me like some guys at intel were tired of sitting in the lab all day and decided to take a road trip. I mean, come on, who comes up with the idea to have your SSD run over by a jet car?
Now, if he had thrown the drive across a concrete parking lot, then I would have been REALLY impressed. But dropping off a building in a pumpkin is pretty funny.
