Looks like the backup partition is the first partition on the disk. The freed space from the backup partition can't be used for the C: drive because it's not at the end of the C: drive partition.
It's possible that something fancier like PartitionMagic will be able to handle what you need to do.*Note: If the partition you want to extend is a boot or system, or cannot be converted to dynamic, you will only be able to extend the volume to the immediately adjacent free space.

Re: HDD Partitions
When fiddling with partitions, watch out for the Dell MediaDirect partition that uses HPA. I got burned upgrading to a larger drive and had a devil of a time keeping the Dell BIOS from limiting the size of the new drive to the same size as the old one. (It tries to fiddle with the drive firmware to make it lie about its size and hide the HPA partition.)
Lots of stuff about Dell partitions here:

Re: HDD Partitions
These Acer guys split the main drive in half..I have the "can't get rid of" 9GB partition a "C" that is about70GB and then a "D" that "was" the same, but as soon as I turned it on the first time, it created a backup image all by itself on the "D" drive..I have now shrunk the "D" partition down to 35GB and formatted the new "F" that I will put Ubuntu on...
It would be nice if I could have recovered that entire "D" partition to the "C" and then setup whatever size I wanted for Ubuntu or whatever..
I think, since I have burned the recovery image stuff and tested it to make sure it works, that I will just hit the whole thing WITH UBUNTU AND see what goes..
