XP Pro and XP Home CD Keys Interchangable?

I know for Vista, the CD Key can be used any on any version, but does the same hold true for XP?

I have used my home key on an install of XP Pro, but I wont say for absolute certain this holds true. Best thing you can do is give it a try. Its only a few hours of your life wasted.

All right, good to know it worked for someone else.

Needed to ask since I have one copy of each, but 8 CD keys for Home and only 1 CD key for Pro (which is being used).

Re: XP Pro and XP Home CD Keys Interchangable?

no, xp keys only work on the version they are intended for

there are 8 main different versions - and the keys ARE NOT interchangeable.

    xp home OEM
    xp home retail
    xp home VLK
    xp pro OEM
    xp pro retail
    xp pro VLK
    xp pro mediacenter oem
    xp pro tablet oem

also, vista keys are NOT interchangeable either. if you try to use a basic key on business, you will either get basic, or a prompt telling you the key is invalid.

there are 8 main different versions of vista:

    vista starter x86
    vista basic x86
vista home premium x86 and x64
    vista business x86 and x64
    vista ultimate x86 and x64

and the keys are only interchangeable between the x86 and x64 flavors of the same version.

this does not include vista upgrade (which are a different key as well)

this also does not include server versions for these OS'es.

Hmm, darn. Oh well, I'll just stick with XP Home then.

    Thanks for the information Dog.

Re: XP Pro and XP Home CD Keys Interchangable?

I mix and match install media and keycodes all the time (get an oem keycode from any make or model dead laptop or desktop and install in on a barebones dell or hp with the corresponding oem media - I have a collection of os install disks from all the major manufacturers: Dell, Gateway, HP, Compaq, Fujitsu, Sony, Asus, Oqo, Toshiba, emachines, Acer, etc.) but the oem xp home key has to match the oem xp home media (no pro or media center)

Yep, have a bunch of keys myself from salvaged rigs and older systems devoid of precious parts.

Was hoping to use XP Pro on one of the older machines instead of XP Home.

XP Home should be referred to as XP Crippled. That's why it's cheaper. Plus, it hides all the scary (and useful) technical stuff from home users.
