    A-DATA jumps the gun with triple channel DDR3

    Even though Intel's Nehalem, also known as Core i7, is still over a month away, A-Data decided to spill the beans on its DDR3 triple channel memory kits. The new Vitesta DDR3 series will be available in 3 and 6GB capacities at 1333MHz and 1600MHz speeds.

    I don't get why they couldn't have done quad-channel rather than triple-channel...?

    I just find it odd to have 6 GB of RAM in "triple-channel" rather than, say, 8 GB of RAM in "quad-channel".

    It reminds me of the days when computers were shipping with 768 MB of RAM rather than 1 GB of RAM.

    I'm guessing tri channel is pretty cutting edge, and they would have done quad if they could have.

    So 64 bit is now the starting point for top-end? Otherwise you wouldn't be able to use that memory...

    Oh well, at least we won't need more than 64-bit memory addressing any time soon. It can address about 4 billion times as much memory as 32-bit memory addressing.

    I've started to become a lot less excited about Core i7 lately and a lot more interested in Deneb. I don't really know why.

    I read somewhere Windows Enterprise edition limits the physical RAM addressing to 128 GB. That's well short of what can be done with 64-bit addressing.

    Something just occurred to me that I will check on tomorrow: does this mean that we'll see motherboards coming back into the marketplace with 6 DIMM slots rather than 4?

    there are also 3GB kits, this one just happens to be a 6GB kit.

    other than the intel reference board that I have seen all the MB have 6 ram slots. the intel board had four slots, 3 tri-channel and one extra.

    Hmm interesting. Unfortunately that also means higher costs in order to take advantage of tri-channel speeds.

    Do these tri-channel mobos also have backward support for dual-channel? Or is it just single and tri?

    Just single and tri.
    Remember, with the new Intel CPUs, it is the cpu that is controlling the memory, not the chipset on the motherboard. Pretty much the same thing AMD has been doing for a while.

    Here is the latest just posted this morning about motherboard prices. Remember, they are going to be pretty high to start with:

    Foxconn's X58 Renaissance board pictured

    and also

    First triple-channel DDR3 kits priced up

    Triple-channel just seems to... uneven...

    and now it's going to confuse people again, who are now used to the idea that they have to add RAM in pairs. Now they have to add in Trios.
