$379 AAO vs $429 WIND if both are similarly equipped with 6-cell batteries.

I think it is nice looking, especially the blue colored one. Too bad it does not have a dvd drive.

Re: Review: Acer Aspire One (Black, Windows XP)
And if it did, the price would be a lot higher, therefore making a ultra subcompact notebook, not a netbook. There's a Japanese netbook out there (we've discussed it: SX3) that has a optical drive, but the price is over $1300. Well into the notebook price range with all of the low-end parts you'd expect in a netbook. Pretty craptastic if you ask me.
Thanks Turkish.
Edit: I still can't remember what it was about the MSI Wind I didni't like. Looking at it again, I really like the larger and more open exhaust vent on the side. I wish the AAO had one like that. The 802.11n WiFi and built-in Bluetooth is nice for those hotspots where it's N only and you can bring along your BT headset instead of a wired headset.
As it stands, it seems the Wind at $430 is a good alternative to the AAO. You get the same features, a 6-cell, and 10" screen for only $50 more. If I remember, the inside isn't shiny, so no fingerprinting to worry about.
You'll probably love it Turkish if you bring it on the road. You'll be laughing in your seat as other laptop users have to start plugging in their laptops.

Re: Review: Acer Aspire One (Black, Windows XP)
Seems the fan inside of my AAO is acting up. It now makes a "buzzing" sound and after about 10 minutes of use is quite loud in a quiet room.
Going to call Acer to see how I should get it fixed. Apparently this problem was never fixed from the first AAO 110s.Acreo Aeneas

Re: Review: Acer Aspire One (Black, Windows XP)
Let me know what they say. Mine's been like that for a month or so now, but it doesn't really bother me enough. I'll probably tear it apart and replace the fan myself with something different and mod up the heatsink while I'm at it.
On a slightly unrelated note, I've been trying to get Windows 7 on mine. However it looks like I do need to break down and get a 4GB thumb drive. No matter how I try to jimmy my SD card (even by putting it in a USB reader adapter) I can't get it bootable

Re: Review: Acer Aspire One (Black, Windows XP)
Well I was thinking by plugging it into the USB adapter that it would read it as a USB drive instead of, well, whatever

I found a 4GB flash drive on sale at Radio Shack (the Cruzer line) for sale for $12 so I purchased it, prepped it, and I now have Win7 running on the AA1
-and I must say, it runs beautifully. Smooth as a baby's bottom. Except that I'm having some Wireless issues. It'll work fine, did the driver install that worked OK, but then when I reboot the wireless is gone again. Says it can't find any APs even though it comes in loud and clear from the room upstairs. So that'll need some tweaking.
Though perhaps now isn't the time to be bellyaching about Atheros wireless chipsets. Any time I've had an Atheros-based wireless item, it's had problems in one form or another. How much faster or slower is the boot time in Windows 7 Beta on your netbook versus that of Windows XP?

Re: Review: Acer Aspire One (Black, Windows XP)
Hmm, then I might put Windows 7 on my AAO then. I'm getting tired of using a vista-skinned XP that isn't even that good.
Do you know if the sidebar gadgets for Vista work for Windows 7 as well?

Re: Review: Acer Aspire One (Black, Windows XP)
Just an update...
I got off of the phone with Acer Tech Support (they gotta make that number easier to find). After some basic troubleshooting, it seems I will have to send it in for repair.
From what the rep told me, typical turn around time is about 3-4 weeks from the moment I send off the netbook. The actual repair will of course only take 3-7 business days.
It took about 10 minutes to get a SRN and getting all of the info verified. I verified that I only need to send the netbook and that there might be a chance they'll wipe the hard drive and restore it to factory defaults. I've already backed up everything important and cleaned out any personal data.
So I'm thinking of shipping it tomorrow or Friday via USPS Priority with Insurance.
Well, guess I won't have the netbook to play with Win7 on for my birthday (2/2/2009).
Hopefully it'll get back to me in two weeks or sooner. I rely on it for note taking in class and for homework when I'm not at home or the school's labs are filled.Acreo Aeneas
