Re: HughesNet
I had a satellite internet and it was fine for browsing, downloading and streaming video. Actually it was better than dsl or even the T1 we had at work. They cache tons of stuff at their server farms and downloads are very good until a bunch of people start using it.
There is limited bandwidth (only so many satellites) so it gets congested at times.
Gaming was impossible for anything that required even moderate reaction times. A one second ping was actually pretty good. Usually it was closer to 2 seconds.
You might be able to get some kind of line of site wireless service. I did know one person that had it and he loved it. Huge bandwidth and very good pings. But it also cost about $170/month.
Depending how rural you are going to be, look to see if there is DSL provided by your phone company. I lived in the country and used a COOP phone company and was able to get DSL before most in Oklahoma City could. Most CO-OPs that I know spend the money to provide DSL to all but the most rural of their customers. This is because the customers in a CO-OP actually own the service.Last edited by El_Gringo_Grande; 01-04-2009 at 07:29 PM.

Re: HughesNet
You didn't mention where in NoVA you were going, but Sprint just started the WiMax stuff there, and it is supposed to get really good speeds, but I haven't heard anything about ping times. I know like on engadget they are excited about it. You can even buy like a router for your home, just like a normal wi-fi, except it grabs WiMax and then spreads it out to the rest of your house. That is mainly in the DC/NoVa area, but will spread out some.
Just saying might not want to get rapped up in a 2 year Sat. contract, as the hardware and stuff for it is pretty expensive, and last I saw, you have to buy it all.

Re: HughesNet
my uncle had satellite internet for a while... i brought my laptop and figure i would try to play some games on it... this is how it went
CSS: loaded the server up decently fast... about 5 sec longer than normal, spawned in, had 777 ping, couldnt open the buy menu for 10 sec, once that happened... my guns just juggled and glitched, i was glitching into a wall while my team was able to talk to me, i could not talk to them, and i was kicked for excessive ping (over 350 ping for over 20 sec is an auto ping)
WoW: could play solo (not grouped with others) alright... and thats a stretch, every move i clicked took 3 seconds to happen, and if you went into a main city, you would DC
web browsing was annoyingly slow... 5 sec after a click a page would START to load, and load at a decent rate after that....
streaming content... not really hampered much, 5 sec wait time for video to start flowing, but this caused us to be hit with a FAP SLAP (i made that up lol)

which slowed the connection to 56k down, 36k up, (this penalty lasts for 30 days, or the next billing cycle, whichever is longer) we disconnected the modem and dish, and ran the modem over with the truck, and threw the dish out, canceled our subscription and nagged the phone company to run 1/4mile of fibre so we would be able to have DSL, havent looked back since,in fact.. the phone company thanked us because our pestering caused them to gain 7 new subscribers in that 1/4 mile

Re: HughesNet
From earlier posts:
Speed of light: 299,792,458 meters per second
Semi-major axis of geosynchronous orbit = 42,164 km
Equatorial radius of earth = 6,378 km
Distance from ground to satellite: 42,164 - 6,378 = 35,786 km
(For comparison, equatorial circumference of Earth = 40,075 km)
Travel time = distance / speed = 0.112 seconds
That's one way, so multiply by 4 to get total time to reply (up/down/up/down) = 0.448 seconds.
Now add the speed of light distance through wires from the ground stations to your house and the server. Then add processing delays as packets are unpacked for routing (ie. read the headers and figure out where to send the packet for the next hop). Then add the time the server spends processing the packet to decide how it affects the game environment, and assembling a packet to tell you how the game environment has changed since its last report. (This last part can be pipelined, so it's not strictly inline with the back-and-forth delay.)Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?
