Re: Kindle 2!
Don't mean to grave dig, but have you gotten it yet? I'm really eyeing them, but I'm not sure if I can bring myself to drop that kinda cash. I mean I read constantly, but that's a good chunk of change. A man could buy a nice pistol with that. Of course I read more than I need to shoot stuff....
But anyways, how is it?

Re: Kindle 2!
I actually cancelled and bought the new ASUS 1000HE netbook with the money instead.
Once I get my old netbook sold, I'll look into the ebook reader market again. I'm kind of waiting to see if that new Oynx ereader is any good and if the $160 5" ereader that a certain company has been promising for over a year will make it to market.Acreo Aeneas

Re: Kindle 2!
Are you talking about the plasti-reader or whatever it's called?
Thing is, with other ebook readers, they probably won't have the Whispernet connections to grab books whenever I wanted.

Re: Kindle 2!
I'm not talking about the PlasticLogic eReader. I'm talking about the Astak Mentor eReader (with WiFi) that the company has been promising to release to market since middle of last year. So far we know of some of the features, prices for each of the three models, but still no release date after several promises of "in a few months". A 5" e-Ink display reader for a mere $160 is enticing especially if it'll support the .MOBI/.PRC format with encryption/DRM.
As for the Whispernet, that's nice, but if a eReader will allow me to browse eBooks other ebook retailers (like Mobipocket or Fictionwise) via WiFi, then I could just purchase using the e-reader and download directly using the WiFi. I also wouldn't have most of my collection tied down to Amazon alone.Acreo Aeneas

Re: Kindle 2!
Kind of on topic, this was announced last night:
Amazon's Kindle for iPhone hits the App Store
I downloaded a free test chapter of a book, but haven't had time to look at it.

Amazon Uses DMCA To Restrict Ebook Purchases
http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/03/12/1846224
Today, Amazon invoked the DMCA to force removal of a python script and instructions from the mobileread web site. The script is used to identify the Kindle's internal ID number, which can be used to enable non-Amazon purchased books to work on the Kindle. '...this week we received a DMCA take-down notice from Amazon requesting the removal of the tool kindlepid.py and instructions for it. Although we never hosted this tool (contrary to their claim), nor believe that this tool is used to remove technological measures (contrary to their claim), we decided, due to the vagueness of the DMCA law and our intention to remain in good relation with Amazon, to voluntarily follow their request and remove links and detailed instructions related to it.' Ironically, the purpose of the script is to make the Kindle more useful to its users.Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

Sorry to grave dig this thread again. Didn't feel right making a new one.
Kindle has dropped to $259
Getting mightly tempting. Any other cheaper ebook readers out there that would offer the same types of features?

Re: Kindle 2!
One of a few that are cheaper than the Kindle 2:
BeBook E-Book Reader ($200 pre-order for the 5" model)
I've had my eye on the BeBook's 5'" reader (basically a rebranded Hanlin 5") for a while now. Although it may not offer wireless (US or otherwise) and may not have 16 shades of grayscale (only 8), it does offer a SD expansion slot that can take up to a 16 GB SDHC card. That's something the Kindle 2 lacks completely (as does the Kindle DX).
As the price point the Kindle 2 is at now $259 for US wireless and $279 for worldwide wireless), it's look more and more tempting. The only downside is if I buy ebooks elsewhere I will have to decrypt them in order to read them on a Kindle 2 (or turn them into ePubs).Acreo Aeneas
