Re: New Headset?
I have these (as do a few other guys here at TG)
TRITTON AX360 Coaxial & Fiber Optic Circumaural True 5.1 Digital Audio Gaming Headset
And it does not simulate surround. The inline volume control lets you adjust front, center, and rear speakers, and it was a lot of fun to play with when I first bought them. I would like turn everything but front down, then just the center, etc. I mentioned in a post here before that a few times I have actually been watching hulu or a movie from netflix streaming and heard something behind me. I used to keep a lot of animals like snakes and turtles for my job in the computer room, and I figured one of them had gotten out or something, so got up to look. Nothing. Sat back down and heard it again, so turned around and was looking and realized it was sound in the headphone's rear speakers. Of course felt stupid afterward, but also really happy I bought the headphones.
They arn't the only one that make them, and in fact a bunch more have come on the market in the year+ since I got mine. Tritton has a few other models as well, but all the reviews I read were for the model I got. Here are some others:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e&Order=PRICED
They just released that $150 set, and I'm not sure it adds enough to justify the price, but I haven't really read any reviews on it.

Re: New Headset?
When purchasing sound hardware, always look for sturdy build quality, but most importantly You want speakers / headphones with a frequency response range between 15Hz and 25kHz if possible, human ears at their best will only hear 20Hz - 20kHz.
A wider than audible range assures the phones can withstand what is thrown at them at a reasonable level of amplification.
As for microphones on headsets, they're never very good so ideally get a decent desktop mic.
And the most important rule of all! (Unless completely impossible) AVOID USB! Go for standard wires if you can to avoid any software conflicts.Stay Awesome!

Re: New Headset?
Ok, i just bought the Steelseries 4H and I must say that they suck... comparing to my Pioneer's SE-4000, that are about 10 years old, the sound is really bad.
The good thing about this headset is only the confort, even with my big ears, they don't even touch them. But even with such a large area around my ears, I can ear more things in my living room, than with the Pioneer's. The microphone is ok, about the same quality of the one I used from a 5€ headset... and it doesn't reach my mouth.
My final opinion is, they are not worth the 47€ that I have paid for them. Maybe the Pionner's are very good, or maybe is just the Steelseries that suck... they are my first gaming headset and I can't compare them to other, but I don't recommend this ones to anyone.

Re: New Headset?
Yep, weak bass (not too bad, but you can notice it clearly) and hollow. It's just not rich and clear as the Pioneers, it seems that there is something blocking the sound from the phones, and that they are not delivering the full sound spectrum (like if they were cutting some frequencies).
Even the sound volume (with the headset wheel on max) is lower, than the pioneer I have, for the same windows %.
I've been playing with them a little more, and for music and movies they really are bad. In games they are not good as the pioneer, but they do their job. I think I'm just too familiarized with the pioneers and maybe I'm just being too much demanding with the 4H.
Please note that the Pioneer's that I have, were very expensive when I bought them and were top of it's class.
EDIT: The best advise I can give you, is to try them in the store and compare them to others, I didn't have that chance...

Re: New Headset?
I have to admit that despite my earlier post, I don't practice what I preach!
I use the Steelseries 4H and have done for a while :P I like how comfy it is on my head basically, the bass response isn't half as bad as Jorge says, but it is definitely below par and not as good as Pioneer can offer.
The microphone isn't great either.Stay Awesome!

Re: New Headset?
Wow, I had no idea that looking for a good headset would be this hard. The reviews are just so varied, some say a certain type is good while others say it 's the worst headset they ever bought
.
After Bamboo told me it 's really worth buying a 5.1 headset, I 've been pretty much ignoring the stereo headsets and am currently looking at these two:
Tritton AX51 Pro 5.1
and
Steelseries 5H V2 USB virtual 7.1
The latter also has a stereo version which is cheaper and comes without USB.
Now there 's a few things I have to note. The Tritton is around 90$ in US but here it costs like 150€, which is almost twice as much... rediculously overpriced imo.
The USB Steelseries is somewhat cheaper but still quite expensive (85$ vs 99€) and comes with USB and has virtual 7.1 with a soundcard in the cable. Reviews are mostly positive but I know most of you advise against USB headsets... could you perhaps explain why?
Another thing I read is that 5.1 headsets do not perform well with onboard soundcards. Is that true cause I got realtek 5.1 onboard and don't feel like getting a separate soundcard.

Re: New Headset?
The steelseries you linked to isn't really surround sound. It is "virtual" surround, but so are a ton of other headsets. The surround in the Tritton isn't virtual, it actually has separate speakers in each cup that fire in different directions.
And when it says it has a sound card in line, that doesn't really matter, because even some of the $35 Logitech USB I've had had that too.
I have seen the exact same model of tritton for sale under a different name in Europe before. You might try to find that because it could be cheaper, coming from a local company.

Re: New Headset?
Good bump, forgot all about this...

Been using it for over a month now and I 'm very happy with it. It is definitely the most comfortable headset I have ever worn. I could game with it for days and I 'd probably forget I was wearing it.
Sound quality is very good imo but I 'm no expert and I pretty much only use it for games.
It doesn't feel like it can take much damage so I wouldn't recommend it to people who easily break stuff... If you are a frequent LAN party visitor, you 'd probably end up with one of the ears falling off. See picture below how they are connected to the top part:

Mic was very quiet on default settings, had to boost it 100% and switch off playback to avoid background noise. Sounds great after that though.

Re: New Headset?
I also ended up getting the same ones and they are quite good. Only gripe is that their is not much room left inside the speakers for your ears, my ears are average size. If you have bigger ears say Obama size I would pass on these ones.
The Megalodon does have a neat carrying case if you care to use them to keep them clean or plan on taking them out of the house for whatever reason.

I got the Sennheiser PC 350. Excellent noise-cancelling and very comfortable! Very happy with it.
