I dont think it can really be qualified as a loss unless all the people benifiting from it here were going to buy it at full price. I know I for one, despite liking the product, can not see that being a particularly high priority anytime in the future at full price, but under 20 it starts to be one of those "throw away", purchases that is much more managable. Same reason I question the validity of the reported loss to piracy in the movie industry, if "I" see a movie, and really like it "I" may get a dvd, but certainly not if it was average, "I" just cant afford it. Instead of losing a purchase from "me", they gain a person telling his friends that 'hey, you should go out and get the dvd, it's really good'. I immagine it works the same way with fraps, in exchange for a discounted price, suddenly they have many more users, who sofar have not demonstrated a great desire to purchase the product, making movies and telling their friends. Looks like a good profit to me.

Looks good != legal

Hopefully, it is legal for the benefit of all the users here. Bamboo is going to find out. The problem is what will stop others from doing this very thing or "join" TG to get the discount?

If you think that a discounted price is a great idea for grassroots advertising, it can be easily accomplished with a sale. That would potentially net more buyers through word of mouth than a small 50 unit sale ever could.

As with Sarc, I don't want to go through another membership only to get a discount on one piece of software. Besides, I rarely play any of the games TG has a server for anymore, so a Supporting Membership would be wasted if I became a SM again.

You are also putting a additional price tag in order to get a discount. That hardly seems fair to those who can't afford SM membership, as you would be only giving them one choice: become a SM or don't get the discount.

In the end, I'd rather pay the $30 than the $80 (or the $9/month) + discounted FRAPS price.

I think it's fair to offer the discount to SM's if TG can successfully pitch a partnership with Fraps. Something like SM's can get Fraps at a discount along with their own support accounts and TG pays a monthly support fee. That can get more people buying Fraps and potentially more SM's for TG. Although, I'm not sure what would happen if a SM bought Fraps then dropped SM status.

They would want TG to be responsible for keeping up an active list and notifying them of when users should be dropped. I highly doubt they are going to give multiple support accounts though. Support seems to be their biggest concern with group buys.

Whatever you do, be polite and professional when you contact them. Run a spellchecker, check your capitalization, and all that.

License or no license, I want these people to remember the community positively.

Take a tone that explains you're trying to create a win for both parties, and that the community, of course, isn't entitled to anything, as, surely, we don't meet what they were thinking of when they wrote their licensing.

Maybe they'll be cool and we'll all win.

I think the license that was being discussed was not a fit for the organization here at TG.

I would also be very interested in this. I contacted FRAPS using their contact form asking if a site license would be granted if we provide a single contact at TG to handle the distribution of FRAPS updates.

I basically got the same standard answer from FRAPS support that Bamboo got a while back. For a site license we all need to be at the exact same location. Think gaming magazine. They won't make an exception. So this volume license group buy deal will not work out at the moment as it seems.
