In response to your first question, yes, you can dual boot 7 with XP, that's how I'm running it until I test all my normal apps with it and make sure they work. Then I may consider formatting my drive and running 7 as my primary OS.

So as this will be my first Win7 load where on the Microsoft labyrinth of servers and sites do I find the DL.....I could go look by hand, but if someone has it off that that'd be cool. Second, will it do automatic dual boot options? Or do I have to go put it in NTLoader by hand?

    Yes you can.
Look back for the thread we had in like Feb. and we posted links to tons of guides on how to do it. It is a little bit harder to set up dual boot with XP than it is with vista, but the guides will walk you through every step.

So will all these copies deactivate themselves when the actual release comes? I'll grab it when I get home and install it on my Linux partition. It's not doing anything since I overwrote GRUB the other day.

Is my two Build 6000 Beta keys still good for RC1 or would I have to get new keys?

Using this edit to upgrade my build 7000. The upgrade from Vista to 7000 went well enough, and I don't feel like spending a few hours reinstalling everything...so I'll see how this goes.

If you mean 7000 (the only other Windows 7 public release), then yes. Not that it really matters though as they're giving out all the free keys you could ever want on their website.

Re: Windows 7 RC coming May 5 for public consumption

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win.../download.aspx is the link for the official download. I found it to be a decent speed.

Now, it IS possible to "upgrade" to the new RC from the previous Windows 7 beta, but it is not recommended. Windows 7 was never designed to upgrade from a previous version of itself and who knows what old code and new code will do to each other. It's probably best to just wipe the slate and start clean. I'm in the process of backing up my data and will then reformat and install Windows 7 on its partition.

I do recommend trying the new version of Windows, but if you do, either do it on a test machine or partition your hard drive (that's the best of both worlds as you can still access your old data). I have been using Windows 7 on my main computer as my main OS ever since the Win7 beta came out, and haven't regretted it once. I haven't switched to my vista partition in months! Windows 7 is complete enough that if I bought it in stores as it is now I'd be satisfied. That being said, this IS a test version and you should NEVER have one copy of data on here that isn't backed up somewhere else, or at least not something you would miss if it vanished. Test versions can become corrupted. Test version can lose data. Chances are probably 1 in 10000 that something bad might happen to your computer, but you do NOT want to be that 1 person that it happens to.

The deal is, Windows 7 RC will be active until March 2010. After that point, it'll allow you to use the OS for 2 hours then restart (once restarted you get 2 more hours til the next restart, etc). After July 2010 it won't work at all.

Apparently some European exec from Acer let slip the release date for retail. Windows 7 is slated to be in stores 10/23/09 (http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-293717.html). So this copy will work beyond the date when Windows 7 is officially in stores.

I downloaded it today and was thinking about installing it on a 2nd harddrive. Can you dual boot from 2 different harddrives? HDD1 = Vista64 & HDD2 = Win7 64?

    or

Should I just resize my Vista64 and add a partition for the Win7 64 install? My HDD is a 500GB without any partitions.

Re: Windows 7 RC coming May 5 for public consumption

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to dual boot 2 different hard drives. Afterall, the computer sees both. As far as the computer is concerned, wouldn't that be the same as having 2 partitions?

For people with Vista setting up dual boot is really not difficult at all. Here is an excellent tutorial video of how you can partition and dual boot a vista/win7 computer (made for the beta but should still be valid)

Once you got the partition set and Windows 7 running, here is another video on how to get your computer to "see" the two hard drives/boots (so you can see your data from vista while using win7 and vice versa)

I was thinking it might help minimize the risk of losing data should anything go wrong by having Win7 on a separate drive. Of course I'd backup all my data onto my external HHD before I did anything.

I'm still downloading now and I have two more keys.

Seriously pondering if I should dual boot Ubuntu and Win7 now on my AA1...

Re: Windows 7 RC coming May 5 for public consumption

Upgraded from Beta to RC on all machines, but one (that one got a fresh install from 32bit Beta to 64bit RC)

All of them run fine. My main desktop still has screen flicker weirdness, but I believe that to just be an ATi Win7 driver issue; as all of the other computers have nVidia cards with Win7 drivers.

So far, everything runs just as good if not better. Downloading the XP mode thing right now, that just might be the ticket to getting 2142 running again without having to dual-boot. Which would be wonderful. I'm sure the 55th would like to see me slinging Pilums again

The AAOne is retaining it's copy of Ubuntu.
