Re: What do you do with your old computers?
Extra desk space. My old rig has my Saitek on it. An old PowerPC (this bad boy predates the G3's and weighs a TON
) and the old family computer (with a VooDoo 2 gfx card!) have a few CD-spindles packed with discs. I would like to do something more substantial with my old rig but I only have one monitor and one keyboard. :/

Re: What do you do with your old computers?
My mom's motherboard died on her eMachine Vista system. I tried to deploy my old game machine to take its place but its memory problem (the reason I retired it) was causing blue screens each time it got to the Windows XP 64 logo screen. I've got it set up to dual-boot CentOS (because it's much more stable running Linux), so I'm thinking I'll just set it up for her that way. She uses it to mainly get email (using Mozilla Seamonkey) and play Mahjong, so Linux will be fine for that.

My old rigs go to this christian charity that sets them up in africa or somin, I just think since I won't be using them at least that will get some use out of the machine. I can find out the details if any is botherd since it seemed a better cause than smashing it and it doesn't costme anything.

My family's desktop's motherboard died. I preformed a few upgrades on it so I reclaimed the extra RAM, ATI 3600, and the sound card.

Re: What do you do with your old computers?
Typically I upgrade my machine and the wife gets my old one. Her old machine gets turned into something else. Anything extra gets donated to a charity that alters computers for people with disabilities.
Old machines in my house have become:
A debian file server
EMC2 Linux based CNC machine (still in progress, I need a driver board)
Web/mail server (I'm gonna add DNS one day)
General library inventory machine running Linux and Telico (still in planning)Retired 6th DB

Re: What do you do with your old computers?
I usually just reuse the parts if possible. I'll try and upgrade another existing computer or piece together a better PC with what I have. Everything else that I can't use I'll hand over to my dad who likes to take some components from PSUs (like capcitors, fans, etc.), cases, and fans and use them around his basement workshop. Anything that can't seem to be used/re-used, gets thrown out into the trash. Unfortunately, the recyclers around here don't take used computer parts unless you have a large quantity of them (stupid rule in my opinion) so old computers do end up in the back alley stacked up neatly sometimes.

Re: What do you do with your old computers?
Mine end up in the garage or a closet or something since I usually try strange things with them and burn them out. Almost started a fire with an old PSU... For the first time ever I think my old computer parts will find a use, my dad gets my motherboard and get to I stick my processor in a socket 775 mini-ITX board and stick it in my car.
