Re: Windows 7 official pricing announced, limited pre-orders start tomorrow

Windows 7 is extreamly quick to install compared to others I've done, so even if I did have to install 7 1st and then reinstall, like I said above, if you only do it every couple of years, whats another 20-30 mins. of time.

And an even better/smarter idea, no matter what way you decide to go, would be to get something like Acronis True Image. You would just install everything like normal, then install some of your permanet apps like teamspeak and xfire, and then do a backup. Then, whenever you feel like doing a fresh restore, you just reload the image, and you are back to a fresh brand new computer with things already set us the way you would want them. And from what I've read, doing a restore pretty quick, not to mention a lot easier than reinstalling the OS, then downloading all your faves and installing them and tweaking them back to how you like them.

I have been meaning to do it that way for years, and never got around to it. I will for sure with 7 though since I have so much extra HD space compared to before.

By the way, Lifehacker.com has an article running right now tofind out everyone's fav. backup programs, and after a few days of voting, they will pick the top 5 (least that is how they usually do it)
    Best Free System Restore Tool?

That's not a bad idea. When you upgrade do you get your XP license back? I'm sure hoping so.

I'm planning to build a new box in the fall once the i5 CPUs/mobos are out and was thinking about doing a dual-boot with XP and Win7, but does it make more sense to get Win7 Professional which has XP mode? In other words, is XP mode reliable enough that I can forgo the dual boot? Also, would I even be able to do a dual-boot if Win7 is an upgrade from XP?

Additionally, is it worth the extra $50 for Professional vs. Premium?

I just bought from AMAZON the Home PREMIUM Upgrade for $49.99 (54.00 Shipped and at your door release day). I was going for the PRO version but the only real difference was Virtualization of XP Programs and backups...

    We Shall see..

Oh..I just noticed.. It doesn't mention 32 bit on 64 bit..Hmm... Both or Same DVD or NO 32 bit OS option??

That's another question. What version to get? I'd love 64 bit but we call know how picky the public is about something new. I'd hate to get stuck with an update version of XP 64.

The disk comes with both 32 and 64.
And if you have a computer that is newer than 2-3 years old, it is a no brainer to go 64, unless you have some really weird setup or like using some really random old software that your company requires.

I finally coughed up the money and got True Image yesterday. I was having a lot of issues installing XP and finding working drivers for everything, so I kept having to reinstall every half hour....

With the backup, I corrupted the Windows install, rebooted, reloaded the image and I was back in a working copy of windows in a matter of minutes.

True Image was VERY VERY useful!! Its also a breeze to setup and keep track of updates, and you can do it incrementally so you don't continuously update your whole image, only the things that have changed recently.

Now if I could only get Windows 7 to install on this RAID 0....

    Edit, got it, very easily:

    Use this file.
    And this guide: http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/inst...0.html#p623806

If you have issues installing on a RAID 0 on a NF4 chipset, that'll take care of it.

I also purchased the Home Premium upgrade but from Newegg and they didn't charge me shipping. Just straight $49.99.

Looking at that chart I'm pretty sure most of us here would probably go with Home Premium (except Damonte). I know I don't need AppLocker or Presentation Mode or any of those other features.

I'm still not clear if you can actually do a clean install with the upgrade media. But according the the Win 7 Pre-Order Faq...

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy...order-faq.aspx

Microsoft designed Windows 7 Upgrade media for Windows Vista. A customer with Windows XP can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade media but must back up their files, clean install, and then reinstall their applications.
I'm wondering if we can do that clean install if we're already running a Win7 RC or beta.

    @Spyder
    I don't know, sorry.

    @Jmaker
Yeah, I read that earlier today on the FAQ, and was thinking the same thing.

Looks like it'll cost me $220 to upgrade my Ultimate system. I think I'll be putting that off for some time. Vista hasn't been a problem for me.

I have the RC on my netbook , so I was asking myself the same question

«Can I upgrade from the RC to the final version of Windows 7?»

When you install the final version of Windows 7, you'll need to do a clean installation. So plan on backing up your data then reinstalling your applications and restoring your data.

Pwnage just xfired me asking the same question.
You should always do a fresh install, even if you get the upgrade disk.
Yes, you could do an upgrade, (not if you have XP), but you run the risk of having little bugs that may not show them selves properly or even right away. And as for upgrading from the RC to the Full, MS isn't going to really test that like the upgrade from Vista to 7. Always try and do a fresh install after backing up your data.

no, the xp license is considered as part of the new os. You technically must have BOTH COA's to be legal.

in PRACTICE however, the xp license would technically still work to activate another machine. - this would be illegal however, so you've been warned.
