VLC media player 1.0.0 hits the web

It took forever, but they finally hit 1.0

Pretty much everyone should have this program as a backup. Amazing what it will do when Mediaplayer and Quicktime won't.

Looks... about the same as it did before

    But still download and installed.

More important is what it won't do: Get you infected from active content carried in those formats.

Last month Microsoft's Quicktime DLL had a nasty vulnerability. Unless VLC used the MS codec, it should have been immune from that.

How do you guys compare VLC to MPC? I've been using Media Player Classic for a while as my primary program, but I have had some trouble with it not handling having lots of videos open at once.

/me imagines Adiventure is actually a creature with dozens of eyeballs on stalks, each watching a different video.

Hopefully they added support for RM and MKV file formats. I know with 0.99 they had basic RMVB support (was still somewhat choppy on the get-go starting up a RMVB video as of 0.99b2).

Not much difference, both have to be configured with the right codecs and hardware to play content properly. SD is not a big deal, however Blu-Ray w/True HD sound requires a bit of tweaking if you want it smooth. As I understand it this the the first VLC release that supports HD. I have used it and they have a lot of work to do.

Re: VLC media player 1.0.0 hits the web

Just as a quick update to this thread, there is a new version, 1.0.3 that is out with some bug fixes, especially if you are running Win7 or Vista.

    Download: VLC Media Player 1.0.3

Fix video quality when resizing the video on Windows Vista and 7, due to
    regressions in most popular drivers

I haven't encountered the so-called "regressions in most drivers". No lack of video quality when I go full screen.
