Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Editions Will Require an Activated Copy for Verification Each T
I just bought a AlienWare which came with a free Windows 7 (Ultimate Version) voucher. Hopefully they release it soon so I don't have to load software twice..

Also, Microsoft just confirmed that there will be a family pack, so 3 copies of Win7 can be installed, and it will cost about $150. Only thing is, they are all upgrade versions. I do have 3 computers with Vista, and 2 of them that would work, but my main rig I like to reinstall often, so still on the fence about buying.

just get some jacked up 'for parts or repair laptop' off ebay for 20 bucks (that obviously has the keycode and COA attached...) if you don't have a spare lying around.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/10...clean_install/
Microsoft has wagged its finger at users to dissuade them from hacking upgrade versions of Windows 7 to get a full copy of the new operating system on their PC.
Reacting to tips being served up online, Microsoft has warned that while it's technically possible to perform what's known as a "clean" install of Windows 7 on a PC, you'll be breaking the law.Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Editions Will Require an Activated Copy for Verification Each T
Technically I didn't do an upgrade on my system. I wiped XP and clean installed it just like it said everywhere to do. I had 32 bit XP and the 64 bit Win7 said I couldn't install it because I didn't have 64 bit XP. Nobody bought that.
Undeterred I booted the 64 bit disc and installed from that. While technically I didn't do the upgrade I feel like I did. I'm not going to use the XP license anymore, and it stated nowhere that you couldn't install a 64 bit upgrade if you didn't have a 64 bit base.

I'm going to do the same thing. I don't see why that wouldn't be considered an upgrade.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Editions Will Require an Activated Copy for Verification Each T
Well I just did the 'upgrade' from XP 32 bit to 7 64 bit. I was to lazy to do a complete hard drive clean and all that stuff. I just followed the directions in the case. When it came up to the formatting hard drive screen, i selected the partition which had XP on it, and it formatted then installed. It never asked for a XP code or anything, so I am guessing that there SHOULD be a way to get the upgrade to install without having XP or vista on the machine.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Editions Will Require an Activated Copy for Verification Each T
...So the student £30 (or $30 depending on where you live) is an upgrade version, yes? So I have this PC that's new and hasn't felt the warm touch of an operating system - can I put any XP/Vista OS on there and then install Win7, or do I need a particular OS? Also (and sorry if this is a noob question) but what is "activation" of an OS?

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Editions Will Require an Activated Copy for Verification Each T
I have 2 internal HDDs. My main has XP 32-bit, my secondary had Vista-32 and W7 Beta-64 on two separate partitions. I just wiped my secondary drive and installed the W7 student upgrade Pro64 freshly. I have just activated it and it has yet to ask me for any previous version disks, keys, or anything. A bit strange.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Editions Will Require an Activated Copy for Verification Each T
This is not true. Clean install can be done without any problems and it is LEGAL. (-:
Taking into account that you can get Technet subscription for $260 it is not worth to get the upgrade."veritas vos liberabit"
