Re: Windows 7 Review: You Can Quit Complaining Now
Vista and Win7 run 2142 fine, both 32 and 64 bit versions. I've been running 2142 on Win 7 since the beta, granted I had to play around a little bit to make PB work but that is their fault for not being quicker to support a new OS.

You can't compare the Ultimate Edition and at the same time rate value.
If you were going for value, that is what the other 2 editions are for.

Re: Windows 7 Review: You Can Quit Complaining Now
What do you mean by "value"?
From the review, near the end:
It’s hard to justify paying $319 for the Ultimate edition — or any price really — to get snap windows, the ability to shake your mouse and slightly improved performance with USB drives. If Microsoft had come out with a free service pack to Vista and called it “Windows 7” it would be one thing. But we just don’t see enough of a change to warrant the purchase of an entirely new operating system. Windows XP Service Pack 2 changed that operating system a lot more than moving from Vista to W7 will.Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

Re: Windows 7 Review: You Can Quit Complaining Now
I've been using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit for about a week and I'm impressed. Boots up much faster than Vista, the new taskbar takes a bit to get used to but is more functional IMO. All the games I've tried so far have worked fine (BF2, PR, a bunch of steam games). Easy to set up, and I see this version working very well for inexperienced PC users. It automatically installed drivers for almost everything, and automatically set up my dual monitor and resolutions during the initial install. I also purchased Home Premium which I'll throw on my laptop so I should be able to compare the two once that comes in (I initially bought the $30 student home edition, but then my University was offering Ultimate for $18 and I couldn't pass it up, so now I've got both...)

Which Windows 7 is right for you?
I doubt this has been posted yet, it is very interesting.

Well there are some "system performance" improvements. Memory management is even better and I know that first hand going from Vista having 42% RAM used after a cold start to Win7 with only 33% RAM used. Shut down time is roughly twice as fast as it was with Vista for me. Boot up time however is only marginally faster (by a few seconds).
Drivers, although not part of the OS itself or managed by Microsoft per se, seems to be more stable for Windows 7 than it is/was for Vista. Again, I'm basing it off of nVidia's graphics drivers. I went from having BSODs every time I restarted in Vista to having none in the last 2-3 versions that I've installed on Windows 7.Acreo Aeneas

I used to eat paint chips. Now I just drink the paint because I couldn't find a salsa that went well with the chips and they were dry =)

Thanks go to asch for merging the thread tags for "window7" and "win7". When tagging threads, please use the shorter one now.

Thanks for this, but unfortunately I'm still not sure which to get (some of you around this forum may remember me as the indecisive guy who takes a while to catch on
).
I'm mainly a casual user apart from some gaming, so (in simple terms) what about Professional would make me want to buy it? A lot of the "features" I have no clue about, but this version seems to be the most popular one, and longevity is what I want from this OS, so perhaps Professional will give me this..?
Also I was wondering about upgrading - will upgrading from one version of Win7 to another (Home premium -> Pro) be like upgrading from XP -> Vista or Vista -> Win7 or will it be less complex...because perhaps I could upgrade for cheap in the future....?
Will Punkbuster work now after Win7 has been released? Apparently there were problems because they didn't want to support "beta operating systems", but I'm guessing that won't be the case anymore?Anger is a gift - Malcolm X

OK new question(s).
I can get this which is pretty handy, especially as Win7 Pro and Home are priced the same, so I may aswell get Pro.
But just a couple questions that may be easier to answer than "tell me what I need":
1. I'm currently working on an old computer, but I recently bought a new one (sans OS), but decided not to get it running until Win7 came out, since it was coming relatively soon and I wasn't in any particular rush to start using it. The 5 step thing they set out here seems to suggest that you just d/l it straight to your PC, so is there any way for me to switch the OS from this PC to my other PC?
2.I'm sorry, I know this is an incredibly nooby question but by clean install it means wipe the hard drives, yes? So why is it called an "upgrade"? Also, same question as above, is there anyway to just d/l the OS without installing and then transfer it to another PC? I guess I could get an old XP disc just to get that other PC running, but don't install anything and just buy the Win7 ASAP on that PC...You can also choose to buy Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for £30, however this may require you to perform a clean install.
I apologise for my silly questions, answers will be very much appreciated
EDIT: I remember a few people had some trouble with PB when they wanted to play BF2 after the new patch about a month or so ago...Anger is a gift - Malcolm X
