@ Shar....the upgrade is an upgrade from an existing OS. If you do not have an OS on the system (or on a disk that you can install to the system) then you would need to get the full version of Win7 if I am not mistaken.

I used to eat paint chips. Now I just drink the paint because I couldn't find a salsa that went well with the chips and they were dry =)

    Oh Crap.
I was looking through the combo deals on Win7, and they have it paired with an Intel SSD drive, and you save $100. Hard part is it is on the 160 Gig version, so it still ends up being over $600.

If they had this with the $80 gig version, even saving like $50, you would all here a sonic boom from my finger hitting the Buy Now button so fast. Or even if they had the drive near the recommended MSRP of under $500.

    Thanks for your response man!

Do you mean it's an upgrade from any Windows OS (e.g. XP) or do you mean a different (lower edition) version of Windows 7...?

When we asked about what the biggest feedback item was that affected Windows 7's development, the conversation quickly moved to laptops, notebooks, netbooks, and any portable device that runs the Windows client. With Windows 7, Microsoft made sure that every edition of its operating system would run on low-end hardware. "One of the feedbacks that we got was how different the needs were for users on laptops compared to needs of users on desktops," Caldas told Ars. Microsoft looked at macro data for laptops versus desktops, and quickly realized it was time to look at what could be done to improve the experience.
Scalability to low-end hardware has been one of my gripes about Windows and where Linux has had the advantage. Looks like someone at MS was listening.

Bummed my disc didn't come last night. Looks like I'll have to take Saturday to get it and everything else installed.

Sharingan and whoever else is unaware of the features and ability's of win 7 versions.

As you can see there is the Comparison chart where you can click on some of the features and see if you will even ever need to use any of them.

The first half of the "features" in that list are basically expected from any OS at this point.

Re: Windows 7 Review: You Can Quit Complaining Now

First off, I apologize for my ignorance and laziness. But I'm hoping someone will bear with me and answer a couple questions.

    1) Home Premium vs. Professional: I can get Home for $30 through this website or I can get Pro for $80 through my school. I mainly use my PC for gaming, browsing, media, and word processing. In my case, is Pro worth the extra $50?

    2) Will my computer's ageing Core 2 Duo e6320 be compatible with the 64-bit OS? I assume it will but I'm totally clueless about this stuff. The only thing I know is that I'll be able to use the extra 2 gigs of ram I have lying around.

    Thanks in advance

Re: Windows 7 Review: You Can Quit Complaining Now

    1) Pro's extra features over Home:
    Encrypting File System
    Location Aware Printing
    Remote Desktop Host
    Presentation Mode
    Windows Server domain joining
    Windows XP Mode
    Software Restriction Policies

    So I would say no

    2) your processor is 64-bit compatible

Yes, your processor is a 64 bit processor so it will work with a 64 bit OS. As long as you have open slots for the RAM you can add them, although if you were doing dual channel before you may lose that feature (I've found the additional RAM to be more important than the dual channel feature myself).

Not sure on versions, I consider anything less than the professional version of Windows model to be intentionally crippled. We'll have to see whether XP mode is important for compatibility but hard to guess right now.
Just because everyone does something does not mean that it is right to do.

Actually, the thing you really need to look at to help you decide is if you need Pro to access your network at school. I don't know the whole story/deal because I'm done with school, but I glanced over articles that mention stuff about it.

I did just find this after a quick search:

What is domain join and how do I check if my school has it?
Some universities might require you to join the University Domain in order to gain access to specific internal sites. Please check with the IT department and/or Network administrator for your school to verify if you need "Domain Join" before choosing your new Version of Windows 7.
The pro version has Domain Join, but the Home doesn't.
