    Unhappy Optimization for Battlefield 2142

My system specs are as listed:
    AMD PII X4 940 3.0ghz (quad-core)
    AMD ATI HD4870 512MB
    4gb ddr2 800 ram
    Foxconn A7A9S 790FX mobo
    650W Corsair power supply

I'm running the game on 1024x768 on this machine, yet I can still only manage around 20-35 FPS when I benchmark it with the FRAPS overlay. Anyone got any tips on how to boost performance? Help appreciated.

turn all shadow settings off and turn AA off, then try again
those two take up a lot of processing power
fraps is a good program to test FPS and has no impact on FPS itself

Make sure that you are not running on your integrated GPU, a 4870 has way more than enough power to run 2142 at such a small resolution. You will most likely have to disable it through the BIOS, but I'm not sure what options AMD provides about disabling the integrated graphics.

Edit: hmm looks like you don't have an integrated GPU, in that case I would make sure that your drivers are installed correctly. Are you having problems with just 2142 or are all your games running poorly?

That 4870 should outpace my 8800GTX... and I get 70+ FPS at 1920x1200 with everything set high and AA at 4x. Something definitely isn't right.

You have a driver issue of some sort. I have everything cranked at 1680x1050 on my AMD64 5600+ and Radeon 2900XT and never dip below 60. You should be blowing my framerates away.
