Can my motherboard handle new video cards?
So.. I just got a new computer, but I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card from a 8600gt to something else. I have AMD x2 2.5 ghz CPU, so its a nice computer, but I'm reading all this PCI **** and it's starting to worry me.
Apperantly I have a PCI Express x16 , but I want video cards like the GeForce GTS 250 or the 9800 GT. Since they're "PCI Express 2.0" Will they not work in my computer?
My motherboard is : M2N68-LA
HP/Compaq motherboard name: Narra5-GL6
Please tell me I can go higher than the 8000 series!

You can use 2.0 cards, but you'll get 1.0/1.1 speeds. So you might not get quite the performance you would regularly.

But if I got a 9800/ GTS 250 it would still be a hundred times better than my card right now right?

everything should work fine, at most you will only see a 1-5 FPS hit from the slower interface
if you can look at GTX260/HD4870 or GTX275/HD4890 which are some of the best performance per dollar or the new HD5870 if you want to be ready for DX11Reapator, overlord of ponies

Whenever you go to these new high end cards you probably will need to get a new power supply unit. some cards require two PCI-E plugs. I f you have a 300- 350 watt psu that won't cut it. Sending your specs in the thread would help to answer some of your questions.

I'm looking to sell my xbox 360 and a few accessories/games for it, so I probably wont be getting anything over $150 (probably).

well.. 300w.. think that's enough for at least a 9800GT....
Might just go with the 9800GT and get a 700 watt OCZ powersupply, if it works with my motherboard that is . . .

That is an entry level PSU, don't even think about using an upscale card with that. Are you using onboard video now? If so that psu probably doesn't even have a plug for PCI-E card. Use this to help you figure out what psu to get. Put in the info for gear you want to install, not what you have: http://www.antec.outervision.com/ . Good luck on selling your 360, with the price drop and all . I never got a call when I put mine on Craigslist . BTW I have a Evga GTS250 (same as a 980GTX+ in specs) for sale cheap, pm if you're interested. I'm running HD 4850's in Crossfire so I dont need it anymore.

Industrial said he's using a 8600GT card right now, so no, it is not onboard graphics.

You'll need a good 400W PSU just for the 9800GT. If you're looking at the GTX line, then a good 500W or better PSU would be needed.

Sorry, I'm really bad with computer stuff, that's why I came here.I keep getting sad when I hear my computer can't handle something, then I find out thats incorrect and get hopeful again, and then get confused again.. bah.
Really, I don't know which I'd preffer, the 9800GT or the GTS 250, but it sounds like my computer would only really handle the 9800GT, not the GTS 250.
I'm just confused, is all. Thanks for helping me though.

You won't handle either one with your current PSU. You might squeak by with an ATI 4770 but I wouldn't push it. A cheap OEM 300 watt PSU just isn't made to handle much of anything. It is made to keep the computer running at the specs shipped by the OEM and to protect profit margins by not costing a whole lot.

The PCI-E slot you have now can take 1.1 or 2.0 cards. As long as the video card is made for PCI Express slots, your fine.
As for picking between the 9800GT or the GTS250, keep in mind that the GTS250 is basically a rebadged 9800GTX+. Essentially, the card is maybe 10% to 20% better than a 9800GT. They're both roughly around the same price. Either would be a leap or two better than your current 8600GT.Acreo Aeneas

The box on the 250 says 450W psu with a 25 amp 12 volt rail. I believe thats the dedicated PCI-E plug.
