also need new computer opinion
This is my first custom build so i might need some tips. I have alot of other people's opinions on whether it would be compatible parts and such but I have figured that all out. This is primarily a gaming rig, just keep that in mind. I will put links to Newegg.com for all the parts.
Specs:
CPU- AMD Phenom Quad-core 3.0ghz (can be overclocked to 3.8ghz with good heat sink and fan) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103471
Mobo- AMD AM2+ cpu socket. Nvidia SLI ready. on this just go to the web page
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131367
Ram- Corsair 8gb ddr2 800, (it only shows 4gb on this webpage, i stripped 4gb of the exact same memory out of my other computer and will combine it with this)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145241
PSU- mushkin 550w, modular (don't have webpage for this)
GPU- Nvidia 250GT 1gb core edition

Hard Drive- western digital 1tb (not specific on which one yet)
cd/dvd drive- not decided

Re: also need new computer opinion
This is a good CPU but you're limiting yourself in the future by going with AM2+. You should really go for an AM3 system. It will be more upgradable. Also, that chip overclocks well on a good ATI chipset. The chipset on the motherboard you've chosen is not great for overclocking or anything else other than running SLI. I'd get a CPU like this one instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103696 . It costs the same as the 940 and although it doesn't have an unlocked multiplier (and therefore will be tougher to overclock), it runs on an AM3 board with DDR3.
This is a poor choice, I'm sorry to say. Nvidia has really slipped in the chipset area over the past couple of years and it is hard to recommend them these days. This board ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128378 ) would be a much better option and it costs less but it won't do SLI. It will, however, do Crossfire if you ever decide to go the ATI route.Mobo- AMD AM2+ cpu socket. Nvidia SLI ready. on this just go to the web page

OK, I guess this might be reason enough to stick with AM2 and the 940, but not with that godawful motherboard. 8GB is a bit more than you need for gaming (and you lose some speed when all four banks are filled) but more is generally better. If you do go the AM3 route, I would suggest something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146868Ram- Corsair 8gb ddr2 800, (it only shows 4gb on this webpage, i stripped 4gb of the exact same memory out of my other computer and will combine it with this)

Should be more than adequate and you can always upgrade later.PSU- mushkin 550w, modular (don't have webpage for this)
Scratch that and get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102858 Faster and not a whole lit mroe expensive. Also, DX11 compliant. (note taht I listed a different card here when I originally posted but looked at some more benchmars and realized that it was slightly slower than the GTS 250,9800GTX+/8800GT 512).GPU- Nvidia 250GT 1gb core edition

Get the Black Edition.Hard Drive- western digital 1tb (not specific on which one yet)
I was going to suggest the one I have but Newegg is sold out.cd/dvd drive- not decided
monitor- Hp 22" widescreen 1000:1 contrast ratio, VGA input

I think you're probably going to want one with at least a DVI connector. Something like this would be much better. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009145
Sorry to pick your build apart (and let me know if you decide to stiick with the PII 940 so I can pick a different motherboard) but this is the sort of advice I wish someone had given me when I was building my first machine.Last edited by Buckets; 10-13-2009 at 07:09 PM. Reason: Different GPU.

Re: also need new computer opinion
thanks so much. well i asked for advice didn't I? hhaha. sorry to say but i already have the 250 gt, i bought it bout 3 months ago i put it in my old machine. I like that screen you suggested i'll swap that. I swapped just bout everything. This was much help. I agree i should have gone with AM3. I didn't know much about AMD since I usually stick with Intel. Plus, I doubt i'll be going SLI any time soon.
Oh i also forgot to put in my case, it's a full tower Azza case. it's only $80 with rebate an it looks nice.

Your video card is still really nice. You're going to have a great rig!
