    3) Support game play in a near-simulation environment. Where the focus of play would not be solely on doing what it takes to win, but doing so utilizing real-world combat strategy and tactics rather than leveraging exploits provided to players by the design of the game engine.

I don't think they're 100% obsolete, but on-board sound is no longer anything to shake a stick at. Basically to improve, you're looking at buying a $100-200 (or more) card, which is debatable whether or not it's worth the money. Many of the current on-board chipsets are already giving 7.1/8-channel sound.

What's sad is that I actually have a good soundcard (SB X-Fi Music), but when I bought a new headset the cables for the analog plugs aren't long enough to reach the back of my case for how I have my desk set up. So I just use the plug-in USB adapter that has it's own sound card embedded, and it works rather awesome for gaming. So for things that matter, I'm essentially not using my sound card at all. :|

    Just placed my order:

    CPU:Intel i5-750
    Mobo:MSI P55-GD65
    RAM:Patriot Viper II Sector 5 4GB (2 x 2GB) x2, 8GB total
    Video: ATI 5850
    HDD:Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB
ODD: PLEXTOR 24X DVD/CD Writer Black SATA Model PX-880SA LightScribe Support
    Case:Coolermaster HAF 922
    PSU:Corsair TX750w

Also ordered some random cables and some blue replacement fans for my case. Yay for spending money?
