Giz Explains: Intel's Entire Confusing Armada of Chips

Gizmodo.com has a really good article just posted a few mins ago that helps explain the Intel CPU lineup. It is a pretty short read and very easy to understand, so I hope everyone will take a moment and read through. I think Intel has really confused everyone here lately and this is a good article to help cut through the mess

Nice read. My Core2Quad should last me until i7 drops in price.

My next upgrade is def going to be the video card.

What they didn't address is how/whether an i7 in socket 1366 differs from an i7 in socket 1156. I'm looking to build in the next month and need to make a decision.

I believe that 1156 can only address dual channel RAM while 1336 can do triple channel. I could be wrong.

Yes as far as I know the i5 only uses dual channel while the i7 uses triple, also the i5 as far as I know is not hyprethreaded, the i7 shows up as 8 cores, the i5 as 4.
Core i7 also has a second quick path interconnect that connects to a second cpu if you had a board that supports dual processors.
Also when the core i9 comes out with it's 6 cores it will use the same socket as i7 and may be able to run on current socket 1366 x58 boards.

If you do 3d modelling/animation, video/sound decoding etc the i7 would be the one to go for, for everything else the i5 will do just fine.

should be a chart under "whats in a name" that explains the basic differences
