Re: Windows 7 - The Mega Sticky

Installed Win7 over the weekend, and while trying to get my sidebar gadgets back it took me forever to find the most useful CPU monitor I used. It isn't in the official gallery any more for some reason.
    Finally found it here:
Vista Sidebar Gadget - Tools & Utillities gallery

Most of the ones in the official gallery aren't as good or are only dual core.
I love watching this thing on my 2nd monitor while gaming and seeing all 4 cores sitting at like 60%. Just makes me curse my gfx. card more

There was a really awesome site from the creator of the gadget, and he had a ton more, and something about him not liking posting them in the official gallery, but I can't find the site right now. Will keep looking......

    Edit:
    also found it on Softpedia:
    Multi Meter 4 Cores 2.0
if that makes it a little more trusting

Make sure you read and follow some of the install guides, like the one from Maximum PC on how to reformat the right way. I finally got to use it this weekend, and the part about Itunes and Steam really came in handy.

This might be interesting to some:

    Understanding Windows 7's 'GodMode'

Make sure you read the comments, as some had trouble after doing it, and people explain how to revert back. Also, they say don't do it on Vista64.

Also for today, just read my Newegg deals email and they have Win7 really cheap:

Don't know if you need to be an email subscriber, but that is by far the best price I've seen.

    Links to the products:

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM

Re: Windows 7 - The Mega Sticky

    Just came across this:

    10 Advanced Windows 7 Tips Part 1

Some stuff I didn't know like the keyboard shortcuts to move windows to the edges. For doing a post like the CES one I have 3-4 Firefox windows going, and this will make it a lot easier.

The one on turning off Hibernation is also good. The other day after looking at how full my C drive was with just the OS, I decided to look at what all was actually there. Using SequoiaView (great program everyone should play with!) I found I had like a 4 gig hibernation file, even though I never use hibernation.
    So I did this:
What is hiberfil.sys and how to delete in Windows 7 free up hard drive space

    Got my wasted space back.

I also hope to look into "Enabling AHCI to speed up hard drive operations" today. See if it can be turned on for my drives. Right now I'm running a Raptor drive for my OS drive, and Win7 still only gives it a 5.9 rating. That makes it by far the lowest score for my hardware. Next lowest is 6.7 for GFX card, so any boost would be good. If you all get a chance, read up on it and see if it gives you a boost. Might want to try a program like HD Tune before so you can see if there is a boost.

Same for me Bamboo, my HDD is by far my lowest rating, and any boost would be good. Let me know if this works for you though, as I am a bit put off by all my HDD failures recently to be the test pig!

For anyone still not upgraded, and are not a student (they can get it for really cheap), ZipZoomFly.com has a really good deal:

If you're a technology student, you can get Windows 7 free through your school's partnership with Microsoft (via MSDNAA). For other students, you can still get the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade through www.win741.com for $65.

Re: Windows 7 - The Mega Sticky

I dunno if this is a fluke, or if I misunderstood what other said...

I upgraded my PC (new cpu, motherboard, ram) and Win7 OEM still worked. I plugged in my hard drive and got the dvd ready, but my old Win7 Pro installation booted up and found new drivers then restarted. A few days later I was asked to activate Windows, and needed to use the automated phone service. I read off the numbers it gave me, inputted the ones the phone recited to me, and was all set. I checked, and it says I am running genuine windows and all that super great stuff.

So, am I one of the lucky ones or something? At some point I plan on getting a SSD and installing my OS to that; I'm afraid at that point I may have an issue?

    This looks pretty cool.
Customize Your Windows 7 Start Menu Button
I actually have my bar on auto-hide, so rarely see my button, but still a good app for tweakers.
