Re: Google pisses off every GPS company
WhiskeySix already posted a pic like this, but this one is from google. I hadn't read this thread yet and was catching up on Engadget, and was sitting there staring at the pic wonder what it was about. Then I saw what companies it was listing and was next to an article about google.
Reason I was confused is there was no text in the article. Just the title The game has changed
and then this picture.

Engadget also got to play with it a bit:
Google Navigation video hands-on: you want this
I don't think we talked about it in the forums, but in the last couple of weeks Apple bought a map company, and a lot of people were confused since they didn't need to with Google on all the Iphones. Looks like they knew something we didn't, and the Iphone isn't getting to play with this.

Re: Google pisses off every GPS company
What's Google's motivation here? They make money from advertisments right? Searches, including those done 'along your route', bring up "sponsored results" among others = money for google.
Doesn't it also make sense for them to release it/license it for iPhone? They don't make money on Android right - it's an open-source OS... so selling more android phones doesn't get them royalties - they just get money from more google-searches, right?

Re: Google pisses off every GPS company
For those on the iPhone and locked into contract with AT&T, it's still too early to jump ship for the first Droid 2.0 platform.
Verizon Wireless IS a better network than AT&T, there's no doubt. The iPhone is still a solid platform and Apple won't be taking this lying down.
However, the best bet would be to wait for Verizon to deploy their 4G network (Long Term Evolution). Move from AT&T to Verizon Wireless when an LTE Android phone comes out, and get all the goodies of Android with the most ridiculously fast network in the US.
LTE is already being field tested in Boston and one or two other metro areas. Do some searching.
Back on subject, this is a great development in GPS/smartphone technology. Google should be congratulated for raising the bar and forcing the rest of the contenders to move forward.

Re: Google pisses off every GPS company
i never understood why apple went with a sub par network like att. Then garmin just released a phone/gps unit as well onto that network. Should be interesting.
that sounds like a good idea trooper.

Re: Google pisses off every GPS company
Just making a joke that plays on the stereotype. You know, guys don't like to ask for directions? Girl tells boyfriend/husband to pull over and get directions and that ticks him off? Now there is some stupid machine giving him directions ALL THE TIME!
Maybe not. Bad joke. Sorry if I annoyed anyone.I’m not racists, I have republican friends. Radio show host.

Re: Google pisses off every GPS company
Wow looks like a great phone, up here in Canada though you'd have to search really hard for any of this new stuff.
Or just have alot of money :P.

Re: Google pisses off every GPS company
Um...isnt Rogers one of your huge cell phone providers? Cause they have both the Dream (G1) and Magic (MT3G), which are capable of running this software. I know lots of canadian people who have android phones right now, have them rooted and have custom software on them. So I doubt you have to search that much.

Re: Google pisses off every GPS company
I am totally wrong, i just went to Bestbuy and checked the Telus one out, rogers has the 2 you mentioned. I still think Canada is quite far behind the us in tech in some areas.
Man google's shares are 500 a pop wish my dad could get into those.

Re: Google pisses off every GPS company
The best part of VZW is their coverage. Absolutely amazing, I have never dropped a call due to MY reception. Also, ATT doesn't even offer coverage for my state! LOL!
Verizon is pretty much it. That is alright, I will take my "Full bars everywhere I go" any day, especially in the middle of nowhere in the Midwest!|TG-X|Turkish

Re: Google pisses off every GPS company
Yeah, ATT kinda sucks on the 3G end because. TMO, being that they got into the game so late has only modest 3G coverage, but theyre expanding REALLY fast. Last I heard from a buddy of mine who still works at the TMO call center I used to, the company plans to have as much or more 3G coverage than verizon does in the next 8-12 months. TMO is also going to be the first company to upgrade their entire 3G network to support 3MB/s, which is almost double ATT and verizon's speeds and makes me quite happy.
But back to the main point, even without 3G, rumor has it that google is also working on a set of "map packs" that people can download to their android devices that will eliminate the need for data coverage (for example, if you're going on a road trip through the mountains where signal would be intermittent or non existent on any carrier) and still allow the GPS and turn by turn nav functions to function. If they do that, its going to completely put the GPS companies down on their knees, cause they wont be able to compete with the availability of android devices (and the discounts that come with them on major carriers with loyalty and contract-extension discounts). After all, why buy a GPS for your car for 300 bucks when you can get an android device for the same price...or less?

Re: Google pisses off every GPS company
I'm trying to remember what animated TV show in which I saw a similar joke. The guy driving is getting really pissed off at his car's navigation system and deliberately making wrong turns to piss it off. It might have been in a newspaper comic, though.
