Boxee media center hits Beta, hardware coming soon

Bunch of tech sites reporting on this last night, and is very good news for folks that have a media library, want to watch their media on TV, or like using services like Netflix streaming.

    Beta news:
Boxee Beta: Finally Ready for Primetime (Just About)
    and
Boxee Beta unveiled: refreshed UI, DirectX support, and new content partners

They also announced they are going to put out a Boxee Box:
    First Shots of Boxee Box

I just checked their site and signed up, but Beta hasn't been posted yet.

I know lots of people love running this on a very old rig because it has such low requirements.

Wow, I didn't like the shape of the Boxee box, but, now, seeing its size, I'm OK with it. I think I might buy a Boxee box instead of building a HTPC to run Boxee.

I was thinking the same thing. Like where would you put that? But seeing it is that tiny, might be doable after all. I just want to see how cheap it is and how well it runs 1080p..................

    Quick update from CES :

Boxee Box officially announced: under $200, Flash 10.1 support

    Hands-on with the Boxee Box

Even if the box sucks, I just want that remote. I can't grab the pic to post here, but it is a remote on one side and you flip it over and has a full keyboard. Tiny and slim and has everything for a HTPC.

Edit: Gizmodo just posted about it, and could grab a pic there:

    Good news:

    Boxee beta officially available

Don't know when I will find time to play with this......

You might also want to catch up on their blog:

    http://blog.boxee.tv/

Has lots of good info about everything. For instance, it turns out the little boxee box is running on Nvidia Tegra 2

Re: Boxee media center hits Beta, hardware coming soon

Decided to give it a go. It can be pretty awesome, but in the 30 mins. or so I played around with it, it crashed a dozen times. About 9 of those crashes was because I was trying to go to my Bamboo wallpaper folder to set that as background picture. Finally decided to try another wallpaper folder, and they all work fine. And they look REALLY good in the background, and as the slideshow. This would look awesome on a bigscreen. I can easily see me kicking back on the couch with that cool remote and watching stuff.

But the other problem I'm having is accessing some of my movies. I ripped a bunch of Futurama Episodes and the movie Hitman before a trip so I could watch them on the plane. I finally got the files to show up, and it even makes a thumbnail for them, and grabs the meta data for Hitman, but I can get the video to play. It has audio, but no video. Weird. Going to have to dive into their forums and try and figure it out.

The online streaming stuff looking cool, and there is a lot of it if you go into settings and adjust to show for different regions and take off the adult lock. Going to have to keep the lock turned on if you have kiddies in the house It can easily access some naughty naughty sites just as easily as youtube.

Lifehacker just posted a good writeup as well:
First Look at the Boxee Beta

Going to have to play with it some more, but it is just a beta.

If only they had Hulu still. I know you can kind of get some of the shows from hulu, but I wish it was an app like Netflix.

This also just posted, with video:

The remote for the Boxee Box is the bomb-diggity, but playing around with Boxee has me worried. I think I'm going to get an Acer Aspire Revo 3610 and throw Ubuntu and XBMC on there instead of Buggy Boxee.

Here is probably the last of the Boxee stuff for now. Going to try and give the Beta a go again soon.

I want to know if the remote will be sold separate?

Here is it on my desktop. I really want to try and get it to open on my 2nd monitor instead of the primary.

Good article just posted on Ars tech:

Hands on: Boxee beta is brilliant, still not quite stable
