if I reformatted my computer and i reinstall steam, would steam allow me to just download hl2 from their server, provided that i've already paid for it?

Yes. Everything is connected to the account name/password.

Re: hl2 cd keys....

Steam has one of the coolest game implementations I've seen. I like the fact that it's "plug-and-play" in the area that I can archive all my Valve games, stop steam, copy the folders over, and steam picks them up automatically when I attempt to run the game. No more installing a 2 GB game everytime I reformat or re-install Steam.

By contrast, Steam pisses me off more and more with the failures valve has had in the implementation. I hope they prefect it one day, but when you force clients to update when you want them to, you're bound to have issues.

On a side note, I am still angered to no end that I cannot even purchase HL 1: Source because I bought HL2 standard. It tells me that I'd have to register another Steam account. WTF is that all about?

Re: hl2 cd keys....

I hear hl1 source sucks anyways. People have told me the models are the same and the only thing different is the water. For the record I just beat Hl2.

Yeah, this really pisses me off too. I thought HL1 had great SP.

Re: hl2 cd keys....

Back to the topic...
You can backup your SteamApps folder on another drive (if you have one) or use the backup option for each game accessed by right-clicking the game(s) in the Play Games window.
I have a 160GB secondary drive for backups.
I believe the backup option allows you to burn the backup to DVD as well.

lets say i setup a new account for steam. if i buy hl1 retail from a store and installed it on to my computer, would steam recognize it and allow me to download other mods like the original counter strike, day of defeat, and anything else in that category?

Re: Half Life/Steam questions

I wish the steam backup tool worked... Just reformatted myself, and i backed up my games on 14 CD's. Took almost 3 hours to do, and as soon as i installed steam(Like it said) and tryed the CD, the EXE generated errors, and gave me this:

AppName: steamrestore.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

Aka, the 14's Are now in the trash, thanks alot steaming pile of you know what...

You just got warned in the NS.com forums about circumventing language filters. Observe your pattern of behavior and reform it, please.
