Upgrade Round 2

As some of you may know, I've been fighting the most migrain-inducing PC errors on my Bad-Boy PC™. This finally came to a head when I installed HL2 and got memory read errors in that and CS:S. Then the only game I could really play was Galaxies. Then that started erroring out.

So, I went to reformat.... blue screen.....

Solution: New Motherboard and CPU (Asus K8N-E Deluxe and Athlon 64 3000+). And let me tell you how much changing a motherboard on a water cooled system SUCKS!

Anyways, here we go (Oncce again, you can click for a larger image):
This is my old setup, ready to be gutted like a fish.

One of the things I was worried about was getting a new water cooler for my new 64 CPU. The old one I had won't always fit the new boards (too big), and I needed an adapter for the 754 socket anyways. End result: I bought a 60 dollar cooler I didn't need (thank god, because I would have had to drain the fluid out of my system).

Ah, the shiny new NForce 3 chipset board with 8.1 megajoule CPU and 50 terrawatt power supply. At least that's what ASUS told me.... I think, or it may have been a Star Trek Voyager episode.

Gutted, with the 6600GT hanging off the side. Hey, I didn't have a lot of room to work with, ok!

Woot, the old cooler fits FTW! Just barely though.

Yay, ugly cords everywhere. And I didn't even bother cleaning them up because all I'm worried about is cool air hitting my RAM.

It's in, it runs, awesome. Already overclocking the FSB by 30 Mhz with only a 3C increase in heat. Plan to work on OCing the 6600GT very soon.

I don't get it. Why does everyone insist on overclocking when it will more than likely do what you want as is?

What am I missing here? Don't get me wrong, I used to overclock processors before the 1ghz barrier was shattered, then there was a need for it. What's the need now? Is there a huge difference with that extra couple hundred mhz?

It's not the destination, it's the journey.

I feel like overclocking because I don't do it that often. And remember, overclocking your FSB means anything on that same bus runs faster (CPU, RAM, Chipset, even AGP although it has different controls).

Pushing an extra 30 Mhz out of my PC took 15 minutes of testing and required no use of overvoltage. That combined with my watercooling makes it a low-risk situation.

Conclusion: I just felt like it.

Your water cooler is nothing compared to the mini bar my Dell's got inside.

Where I did:
Do some research.
www.overclockers.com (which seems to be down at the moment).

Most decent boards comes with jumperfree OCing BIOS settings. They make it so you can easily move your speeds up until your PC just won't start. Then you can use something like 3Dmark to test for stability.

Not that I really need it. I already pull 60 fps in CS:S without it, and SWG loads an entire planent in under 30 seconds now.

The one that came pre-built into My Case.
