Internet problems

i'm running a wireless cable internet (linksys) from my computer downstairs provided by Comcast. The problem is that every few days for no apparent reason the wireless reciever will only send packets but recieves them ALOT slower, to the point where it will connect and my computer tells me it is running fine. But it won't load webpages or connect to aim or run any programs ie. Natural Selection.

any ideas?

I have this problem when I run BitTorrent. It doesn't just consume the resources of my machine, it consumes the resources of my entire NETWORK. No other machine on the network can do ANYTHING. The BT down/uploads on my box are humming like a champ, and the INSTANT I close the BT client on my box, the entire network resumes standard performance.

I find that it's too troublesome to run the original BT client with upload capacity set. I use a program called NetLimiter to easily cap the amount of bandwidth BT can use. It's a nice and easy way of freeing up your connection for other things.

right... but lets not talk about BT. lets talk about the problem of my reciever not being able to get the packets from my computer downstairs. everything is plugged in correctly i know that for a fact (i'm not that much of a n00b). and the thing is only a whole 3 weeks old.

How does the problem go away? Do you have to reset the wireless receiver? How far is it from the receiver and what's in the way? Maybe it just needs to be in a different location. I'm not sure what else to suggest. Somebody else must have some experience with this wireless stuff.

How far is the receiver from your PC? Maybe it's too far and can't get a good connection.

This might sound stupid but is there any metal in the walls? Metal in the walls make is harder for the receiver to reveive the signal because the metal bounces the signal around so that would explain why some times it happens and some times it dont.

You could try moving it closer to the computer. The distance might be a problem. Sometimes the unexpected happens when troubleshooting problems.

imy friend had the same prob and what he did was mount the reciever up in his attic above his office and it worked wonders. No metal to interfere with the connection
