I have to second that. I'm using Gentoo on my laptop and have recently replaced FreeBSD on my firewall with it. The Portage system is easier to use than FreeBSD ports, imo. It runs much faster on my puny laptop than Mandrake 9.1 did, partly because it's compiled and optimized for my system rather than a generic x86 with ubersafe optimizations.
