I was reading that there were few drivers available.. In fact, I read that SATA was not supported yet.

Anyway, this is why it's free and oem only now.. To give a headstart for drivers before they start selling this on shelves.

Umm, the drivers problem was early in the WinXP64 beta, I believe. I wouldn't be surprised if everything in your new machine had drivers.

Re: I'm ready to upgrade - need your help..

I'm sure Nvidia's got drivers out at the moment (they're uber like that), Creative probably will soon as well. As far as SATA support, that's probably out already too. If that's the case, then when I get my next comp i'll get it started with XP 64-bit.

Those are just guesses, but for the most part, isn't it supposed to be 32bit/64bit, so drivers from 32-bitXP for the most part should work in XP 64-bit? Maybe they won't work as well, but they should WORK, right? I'm not very knowledgable of course about the software differences of 64-bit computing, but XP 64bit should be fine with 32-bit apps, so shouldn't it work with 32-bit drivers?

Ok Tempus... now that you've put together your machine and had a few problems... what is your assessment of the custom-built machine? Was it worth the time, effort, money?

Re: I'm ready to upgrade - need your help..

Wow, good question. Now that I've done one, it would take me far less time in the future. But the unexpected can always occur, and that part is frustrating as hell. And on top of things, the documentation that came with the motherboard was useless, so it took me forever to get the damn thing to appreciate that I was NOT running a RAID configuration. There are two separate raid controllers on this board, and they each wanted their piece of the pie.

Anyway, I ended up getting a very good system for a very good price. I have a nice new case and a 500watt PSU, a 3200+, 1GB Corsair XMS, 73GB 10,000RPM Raptor, GeForce 6800GT, Audigy 2, and XP Pro for a little over $1400.

How many hours of your time did it take to bring the machine to the state that it would have been in had you ordered it retail?

Re: I'm ready to upgrade - need your help..

By the time I'm done with everything, I'll have spent about than 8 hours on this. I realize this affects the relative value of the system, and I'm not sure how much it would have cost me to buy a prebuilt system like this (or where I would get it).

But this was my first time. I'm sure it would take me less than 3 hours next time. I can, however, take pride in the fact that these components are exactly the ones I wanted and that I assembled it myself.

Good work!! Like you said next time will take you a fraction of the time. Plus I am sure you learnrd many things you did not know before. Of course there is always the self satisfaction of knowing that your rig was built by you.

Re: I'm ready to upgrade - need your help..

I'm surprised the motherboard came configured for a RAID setup. I haven't seen that before.

The first machine I built actually took me close to 20 hours over a two week time period. Ever since then it does take only a couple of hours... and you rarely have to build a whole new machine from here on out. You can just keep updating parts.

I'm glad you consider it a success. Many people get frustrated and never want to do it again.
