Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines - FPS/RPG, great story and dialogue
Deus Ex - AWESOME genre blender. FPS/RPG. Great story, dialogue, and just a work of art
System Shock series - The scariest games in existance, no exageration. FPS/RPG. Best villain ever. EVER.
Thief series - Invented stealth, and are still 2 or 3 of the best stealth games you can get. Also have VERY well done story.
Anachronox - A wonderful and funny RPG.
American McGee's Alice - One of the most artistic and stylish games ever.

I really don't want a RTS, nor a FPS, but Rome Total War looks good, and it's mostly strategy. I think I'll try that one.

Of the games listed, or even of those that weren't, what would be a good single player, turn-based strategy game? For example, the civilization series was great to play but after a certain point the turns took forever and you already knew who was going to win w/o completing the game.

If you don't want RTS then don't bother. I think the real-time battles are the primary draw to the Total War series while the strategic portion merely supports it.

Anyway, I love TB strategy and CRPG. It's what got me started many many moons ago back on my old Atari 400.

Have you tried these:

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic - excellent fantasy TBS with good single-player campaign. Also supports PBEM (play by email multiplayer if you're interested)

Civilization 3 w/Conquests xpack - can't go wrong with Civ



Now for the "indies". Some of the very best of these two genres are made by independent developers and are freeware and/or shareware:

Fate - www.playfate.com -- very fun little dungeon crawl RPG, like a mini-Diablo

Battle for Wesnoth (Freeware!) - http://www.wesnoth.org/home - fun little TBS and you can't beat the price

Avernum 1-3 and Geneforge - www.spiderwebsoftware.com/ -- fantastic shareware RPG's! Very retro graphically, but the gameworlds are huge, alive, evolving, interesting and have wonderful storylines that'll suck you right in.

Dominions 2 - this is one of the most addicting little TBS's I've ever played...I still play it every week (I'm in a couple PBEM games). The interface leaves a lot to be desired but once you figure it out, the game itself is superb.

Mount & Blade - http://www.taleworlds.com/ - this is a really amazing game put out by a husband and wife dev team. It's sort of a medieval simulation/strategy/RPG/action hybrid. You create a character and then run around the land as a mercenary, bandit, soldier, merchant or whatever. You decide. You can take on jobs and quests. You can hire troops and eventually you can have a nice little army if you want. It's not exactly turn-based as you move around the map in real-time but you can pause at any moment. The battles are done in real-time and they are awesome! There's nothing quite as fun as riding horseback into battle and cutting down infantry with a war-axe as you ride by.

Thanatos

If you can find a copy of Master of Orion 2 in a bargain bin somewhere, then jump on it. It is one heck of a time-waster.

Otherwise, Silent Storm is excellent tactical squad combat, as was mentioned before. You should be able to pick that up cheap also.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and its sequel are also awesome RPG's that excel above the new prequel movies in almost every respect.

Spyder

First Kotor rocks the entire way through, the second Kotor had a better story but a piss poor ending (ending was never properly finished, 12 month development cycle, rushed out hte door, etc. But the first 3/4 of teh game are great)

Play them just for the HK-47 quotes.
