Yes, exactly. No light = no PHYSICAL connection exists. So if you've eliminated the cable and the router, the only thing left is the network card. No light means no network card is there, or the computer doesn't *know* there's a network card there.

by net work card you mean the card the modem plugs into. I camn get on the internet with the wifes compif i bypass the router

Make sure it's the right type of cable. Look at the coloring of the wires inside the connectors on both ends. Are they the same pattern, or are some color-pairs switched? When going from your netgear router to a PC, you need a straight-thru cable, where the ends are identical. If they're not, it's a crossover cable, which is used for connecting two computers directly together, or sometimes connecting a dsl/cable modem to a single PC.

It's possible that your router has cable-autosensing (also called n-way) where you can use either cable. When in doubt, use the correct cable to be sure.
