What size power supply does it have, and what kind of hardware to you have installed (including USB devices)?

I think that your lost clusters are due to your hard reboots, not the other way around, but it's still possible that you have a bad HDD. If there isn't any unrecoverable data on the hard drive, then I'd definitely check it out and do a low level/factory format on it. Easy way to eliminate that from your troubleshooting....

Re: XP helppppp !

I've actually been having a similar sounding problem over the last month or so with my XPpro install. Mine, however, allows me to move the mouse about and the screen keeps refreshing, but I lose any interactivity what-so-ever. Wish I knew the answer. Well, actually I do... reformat -> reinstall. I've been meaning to do some repartitioning to make room for my linux install anyway.

Which is what I'm trying to avoid....the inevitable probably...

Oh yea...the PS is a 250 watter...the stock one it came with....the only usb device added is a printer....and that's been months ago... However, upon checking, the mobo is VERY dusty, as is the fan systems on the chip/vid card/ etc. Gonna have to go get me a can of air and see if that helps....maybe a heat issue ?

250 watts? What are the rest of the specs? I would suspect this is the culprit, although cleaning the dust would definitely not hurt.

Cheap power supplies tend to lose their ability to deliver solid DC voltages after time... Bad power is without a doubt the number one hardware problem that appears to be a software problem.

Re: XP helppppp !

Well....maybe it isnt the PS... earlier this evening...the thing kinda froze...except this time, I was able to use the keyboard, but no mouse....the optical lit up when I moved it, but no reaction on screen...I checked, and the cable was almost pulled out...I unplugged it...shut down, replugged...and rebooted...no crashes as yet....could that even have possibly been the issue ??
I'm still gonna dust it out tomm. tho

USB connection? or PS2? I don't know that either one can cause a short by being partially unplugged, but a short could cause those types of problems.

Re: XP helppppp !

Cing... you keep saying his PSU might be the problem, even though phyliss keeps saying NOTHING has changed for a couple of months, and it was fine when he first brought it.

a good 250watt psu will outperform a rubbish 300watt psu, i would know since my first 300watter blew up when i pushed my TB800 over 900......while a 250watt from sparkle worked great all the way upto my TB1200 system.

lets hope the mouse issue was the reason for the crashes huh
