I read an interview with gates where he said longhorn was hopefully going to be rental only. Anyone know if M$ have put those plans on hold?

that sounds clever. im supprised they not thought of that before.Originally Posted by RGM-79N_GM_CUstom
If you want to play a game, Vista will disable every component of your computer that isn't needed by the graphical interface and unloads the Windows Desktop (it's like running a game in MSDOS).
im guessing 1gig min, 2gig recommended. 4gig recommended for 64bit version... etc......

Re: Very Long read on windows vista
I suspect the thinking at M$ was that if you look at how much the average legit user pays for a version of windows, and how long they tend to use it for (I'm not alone in still using 98se), they can get more money out of people if they rent instead of sell. I imagine that there'll also be something like steam involved, so that you can't run an earlier version. You'll have to have whatever the latest update is. Control ftw

We are already there. Even if you turn off auto updates, they keep finding a way to make you upgrade XP. In those upgrades, they force you to revalidate your install, click a new EULA, and generally make the customary bowing and scraping westwards towards Redmond.

There are ways to work around these checks....But you "shouldn't" do it.

I'll Purchase the OS, but I will not rent it.
I wouldn't even mind paying a little for Service Packs, assuming they are not required for use of the system.
I expect customer service for things I buy. Looking at it this way, I do not see any customer service here... I see "You use our product and keep paying for it, or you use nothing at all, if theres a problem you pay to fix our shortcomings."
Microsoft should tread lightly here, they may think they can handle the loss of people for recurring cost of their product, but the longer it goes on, the more appealing the alternatives look, and at least in my area, people are always looking for ways to save a buck.RAWGRLRLRLRRLGLRL!!!
Nations are like individuals: they achieve more when they plan to plant a tiny tree, and do it, than when they propose to raise an entire forest and then fall asleep in the furrows.
I AM socializing artard, I'm logged on to an MMORPG with people from all over the world and getting XP with my party using Teamspeak

Re: Very Long read on windows vista
Indeed, especially with the ever increasing popularity and usability of linux. Misteps like this are potential causes for rival companies to break m$'s monopoly on retail OS. (which would be devistating to M$'s income, even if they only lost a market share of say, 10-15%) Piss off enough people, and they'll start looking for an alternative. Enough people start looking, and somebody will take advantage of it, I guarentee you.

Re: Very Long read on windows vista
I think part of the whole renting idea came from the fact Microsoft wants to force folk to have up-to-date security patches, and everyone running the same version of X, Y, Z, etc...By renting the OS, MS could dictate how often you update, no 'ifs', 'ands' or 'buts'.

Re: Very Long read on windows vista
It's getting close. I think Linux is almost there...actually, it's better in many respects. The latest kernel series is fast and stable, more and more hardware is supported, and the desktops are actually useful.

Gaming is the big area of lag, and probably will be for the forseeable future. I don't think every windows game will ever be able to run on linux, but I'm of the opinion that it doesn't need to. So long as it plays the good ones, that is enough.
