Ohh yes, OTF sensitivity is VERY important! This one has the most OTF of all

Re: Help me find a gaming mouse please!

Yeah
Wired mice:
Razor Diamondback if you prefer the smaller mouse design.
Logitech MX518 if you like larger more ergo mice, and are interested in the OTF sensitivity

Wireless:
No question. MX-1000 all the way.

You can't go wrong with any of those mice for gaming. it all comes down to which one fits your personal preferences.

Nah, the tracking cabaility they're talking about is the ability of the mx-1000 to register movement on just about anything. DPI is a measure of how tightly the mouse can differentiate this spot from the spot next to it. The higher number, the closer the spots are to eachother, meaning the higher mouse sensitivity you can have. If you're used to playing on extremely high mouse sensetivities, then DPI is the important number, and bigger is better. The tracking thing means that while Opticals tend to have issues tracking on certain surfaces (particularily highly glossy ones) the mx-1000 has way fewer issues with it.

Well, not exactly.

DPI is a measurement of the number of dots per inch, or potential samples per inch, a mouse is capable of reading. In order for the mouse to be able to read that sample, there needs to be something on the desk surface that provides enough texture or pattern for the mouse to use to differentiate between the previous point sampled.

Optical mice are decent at this, but laser mice are much more capable in reading those changes on the surface.

If you took a pure white reflective surface and tried to use a conventional optical mouse on it, you would have a hard time properly tracking your movements. Now if you replaced that optical mouse with a laser mouse, you would have no problem tracking movement.

In the MX1000 world, 800DPI feels like 2400DPI.

Re: Help me find a gaming mouse please!

Thanks for taking me to mouse school Apophis and Spyder! One more question then: If you have a good surface for your mouse, like a pad meant for gaming then the laser is less of a factor than the higher dpi, right?

This is true up to a point. As long as there are 1600 discernable changes per inch in the texture or pattern to the surface, a 1600 DPI mouse will be able to function at full resolution. Most normal mouse pads don't have enough texture/pattern in them to provide this. They do make special mouse pads (usually metal with very fine crosshairs embedded in them) that are pretty nice.

Look at it this way. An optical mouse can count threads on a mouse pad, a laser mouse can count fibers on the threads.

Re: Help me find a gaming mouse please!

wow - thanks for the replies guys - that was all really helpful (especially the mouse review guide!).

I'm gonna have a look at the mx1000. The 518 also looks good, but i just don't like the pulling of wired mice. This isn't helped because I keep my computer below my desk, so there is a tug from the weight.

The razorback looks good as well, but the 3 reason's I'm gonna look at the mx1000 is the tracking ability (I don't always sit at my desk when using the computer), the size (not a fan of small mice, my phone is bad enough), and also compatibility (I use a logitech keyb/mouse setup now, so hopefully should be able to link it into that receiver.

Many thanks guys

Re: Help me find a gaming mouse please!

I have an Mx510 and i love it. It doesen't have the sensitivity adjustments like the 518 but it's cheaper(i got mine for $30 us) and other than the sensitivity controls it's the same thing.

Re: Help me find a gaming mouse please!

i have used the MX-100 from across the room using things like my pants leg and a wall for the mouse surface.

As far as DPI goes...

I have a razer boomslang 2000, 2000 DPI wired ball mouse. I love it and I was a huge fan boy of that mouse until I got an MX-1000.
Now my boomslang is attached to my parents old Athlon T-birs 1.2 GHz and my MX-1000 is my gaming mouse.

Re: Help me find a gaming mouse please!

i went andbought the mx-518 at best buy..they had an open box special so i got it..

but i am returning it..it is damn uncomfortable for me, as i have tiny hands, and the placement of the thumb buttons is damn annoying..i had a very sore hand from last nights playing on the #1 server...

it is no better than my 5-button microsoft mouse i already have programmed, though it is "smoother"..but not anywhere near special enough to justify the almost $50 i spent..i might try the razor, since they have it on with a $10 instant rebate in-store..but i don't know yet..it felt kind of funky at the display for it...

the cool wireless laser mouse did feel a little better, but it is a little too expensive for me right now...i might try it eventually..

anyways..just my $.02 worth..

Re: Help me find a gaming mouse please!

518 > 1000
Lazer is mostly marketing strategy.
The 518 has that on the fly sens programmable button changing stuff.

Cordless, the only way to go is the 1000, but honestly...when do you really need a cordless mouse besides asthetics? (You did say you wanted a gaming mouse, not a pretty one ).

Re: Help me find a gaming mouse please!

Diamondback, this is an excellent mouse. The side buttons are somewhat different than normal (such as the mx 510) but in a short time they feel there way into your grip. I have nothing but top line performance from this mouse and once again the sensitivity is excellent.

I don't see what cordlessness has to do with aesthetics, but I will never have a mouse that forces me to drag a cord around ever again... That cord drags and slows your responses, whether you notice it or not.

Count this as another recommendation for the MX1000. It's an amazing mouse. Especially now that they're available for under $50 with rebates!

Re: Help me find a gaming mouse please!

$56.50 CDN turns out to be $46.47 American. Sounds about the same as you pais for the 518.

Plus shipping of course..
