Windows XP CD Key and Brand Name

My teacher just gave me a copy of a Dell Windows XP CD.

This is Windows XP Home edition. On my Compaq at my house, I have the CD key printed on the side but I do not have CD to factory restore.

So tell me, if I were to go home, format C:, reinstall Windows XP Home with MY CD key but the Dell Disk, would it work? That's what I need to know...

Probably not. I've tried that, and had limited success with it. On one system, it worked, another it did not.

Re: Windows XP CD Key and Brand Name

Well, I don't really have an option. Compaq is saying I'll have to pay about 25 bucks for a factory restore disk, plus like 11 for S&H, and I'm broke and out of a car. Kinda screwed there.

Is there any way I could possibly test it? Maybe... slave a hard drive and hope it works?

I thought I heard or read somewhere that all installations of Windows were required to be shipped with a copy of the media and a CD key?

A friend recently bought a laptop from Dell and it came with neither.

Plenty of other methods....cracks, keygens,torrents.....All I am saying is that the only thing the key on the side of you system is good for is those OEM discs.

The key should be underneath. And Dell started shipping with a program to burn restore discs, if I recall correctly.

Re: Windows XP CD Key and Brand Name

WRONG!

the cd will work fine with any OEM license key. though there is some gray area as to the legality, as long as you have a valid legal keycode, you can use the matching media (oem, retail, open license, upgrade) to install the OS. you will have a dell branded OS on a compaq box, so windows genuine advantage validation might be iffy. sometimes it will spit out that "the builder of this computer cannot be verified. there is no further action required on your part. if you have questions about the validity of your OS, YADDA YADDA YADDA"

it will be fine, however.

I have written a guide in this very forum on this topic. it might help to read it as well.
