Re: Minimalistic Anti-virus program?
21.2 Mb doesn't seem like a lot of memory usage. NOD32 from ESET (http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm), the av I use, is considered to be low on resources, and it's at 16 Mb. Of course, I turn off the real-time features of the program, since those tend to add more to the memory.
I went to NOD32 after getting tired of Norton and its annoying use and infiltration of my system resources. I've had NOD32 for about a year & a half, and at the time, I think it was considered one of the better av programs out there for detection and low resource usage. I paid $40 for it with a renewal of $27.30 per year thereafter. It is a little less user friendly than some of the other av programs out there, though. IMO, NOD32 still is one of the better anti-virus programs, but according to some forums and websites I've found (see below), it seems that they believe that Kaspersky is the better, although NOD32 still seems to be in the top 4 (according to the comparative website). Here's the links to the forum and comparative website (take them for what they are worth): http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14572938 http://www.av-comparatives.org/ http://www.av-comparatives.org/seite...e/report07.pdf One last note: another thing to also use in conjunction with your av program (if you don't have Trend Micro already) is the free online scan from Trend Micro: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Re: Minimalistic Anti-virus program?
Its a good idea to double check every now and then, Its to easy to just believe you are virus free becuase this or that program told you.
I have had AVG tell me i'm virus free and Panda told me i wasnt. |

Re: Minimalistic Anti-virus program?
As Iamevil & cingular stated above. av programs don't always catch all the viruses & worms that another may be able to catch. To me, it's the same thing as checking for spyware with 3 programs rather than one (ad-aware, spybot, & hijackthis. Technically, hijackthis doesn't look for spyware, but it does tell you what's running and what's being loaded up. Also good for cross-checking with your av program).
As far as reasons, it could be that an av program already has the definitions updated, where the other doesn't. Or one has better heuristic detection, which looks for certain virus & worm-like behavior of files before the definition has been added to the standard virus list. There's also something called false positives, which as you can tell by the name, are files being called viruses & worms that aren't. So, if you use a second av (preferably one online so you don't have to have two AVs installed on your hdd), you may be able to cross-check whether it was an actual virus or not.
