Re: what would you recommend for a gaming pc
Buy parts from newegg, build it yourself. For a budget gaming PC, you're looking at getting an AMD XP 3000+ system with 2GB PC3200, and a Geforce 6600GT. You can build a system at that level for around $1000 from scratch. (sans monitor and WinXP, usually)
The downside is that you won't be able to upgrade it very far (you can build for video card upgradability by going PCI-e if you want). The upside is that it'll still play the newest games at decent levels for atleast 2 years. If you have another $500 or so, you can go with an amd64 system that can be upgraded at a later date. If you plan on doing a whole system rebuild every 3-4 years anyway, you mightaswell stick with the $1000 build, IMO.

Re: what would you recommend for a gaming pc
Ninja's Crazy AMD Budget Gaming System!
Mobo - Asus A8N-E (socket 939 amd64 PCI-e) $119 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131530 CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice - $146 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103537 GPU - Gigabyte PCI-e 6600GT - $146.50 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125156 RAM - Patriot PC3200 1GB modules, 2-3-2-5 - $261.56 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220045 Power Supply - Fortron 500W for AMD64 systems - $97.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104934 Sound Card - Audigy 2 ZS 7.1 - $77 after rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102171 Case - Any ATX case will do you, price ranges from $45-$200 depending on what style and case material desired. HDD - Seagate 160GB SATA - $91.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148034 Rom Drive - Lite-On DVD-burner - $42.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106988 That's essentially your core PC. Total price (shipped) from newegg at current listing prices: $983.03, + whatever you spend on the case, monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard, and OS. And you could upgrade everything on that PC significantly. And of course all parts (except the HDD I think) are retail, and come with mnfg warranties. You could also save money by buying cheaper brands for some of that, I went with the PC I'd build for that price range.

Re: what would you recommend for a gaming pc
If you think your $2000 computer is going to be protected by a $10 surge protector, then by all means, do whatever you want. I actually ahve about 10 different reasons for buying a good, quality PSU, Surge issues being one of the 10.
I will, however, point out a quote from our good friend Murphy: A $300 picture tube will protect a .10 fuse by blowing first.

Re: what would you recommend for a gaming pc
I just wanted to point out two things:
1. The original poster is in the UK, so none of these NewEgg links are going to do him much good... b) The power supply for your computer does MUCH more than protect your PC from electrical surges. If you don't care to believe this, then go ahead and buy a $20 PSU and maybe you'll get lucky and it'll work for a while before frying your mainboard...
