Re: Which FX Card

Thought as much..

Your gonna be very happy with the card - if you wanna overclock try using the Trixx oc tool which comes with the bundle on the CD - i had better results with this than Rivtuner & ATI tool..It also has a great Fan speed feature...Good luck and post your results when the card turnes up.

Re: Which FX Card

Its too bad you cannot afford the ATI X850 XT card, its a nice one. I have the X800 XT Platnium card. I was never an ATI fan until I got this card. I was always NVIDIA fan, but ATI has the better cards if you can afford the expensive ones.

Re: Which FX Card

With xmas coming, I'm dropping all sorts of hints to my family about a new graphics card. It needs to be nvidia because they're generally better supported under linux. How would a Geforce 6600GT 128MB AGP do? I have a celary 2.6 with 512MB on an abit IS7-V mobo. I know that compared to my current card (a product of the stone age) there'll be a boost in performance, but I'm more concerned with how it will perform with my current system.

Also, I've heard that this card has a molex socket???

The card spec is :
Core Speed (MHz) 500
Interface Type AGP 8x
Memory Interface 128 Bit
Memory Speed 900 (450 DDR)
Memory Type GDDR-3
RAMDAC 400 MHz
Supported APIs Direct X 9, OpenGL 1.5
Video Output DVI, S-Video

Anyone able to translate this lot into "It will work fine with your system, and will give great performance"?

Re: Which FX Card

A molex connection is one of the wires from the psu with 4 connections, you need to plug one of those into the graphics card.

Also its recommended to have at least 350 watt powersupply to run a 6600GT card. Your CPU might bottleneck the card a though, but that shouldnt be a big deal.

It should work well in your system if you have enough power for it. As in all high with 2x AA.

I asked for that. I know what a molex is, I'm just surprised to see one on a graphics card. Next time I'll explain myself properly

I have a 480W tagan PSU.

Re: Which FX Card

Most newer cards from Nvidia needs a molex connection since they draw a crapload of power. I think its around a 100 or more watt under load.

You should be set with that powersupply.

Re: Which FX Card

Id personally go for either the Leadtek WinFast 6800nu extreme edition or 6800LE - there is a chance your be able to unlock the pipes and vertex shader's on both cards to 16/6 - these cards overclock like a dream and have great coolers. Not bad for around £100.

Pop another 512 stick in as well while your at it and Your CSS play will be even smoother

I'm not into overclocking, but yeah - another 512MB would be a good idea.

Re: Which FX Card

They love to make buying parts complicated, don't they?

I just found a XFX GeForce 6600GT 256MB AGP, but when I checked the specs, there's only 8 pixel pipelines. I've seen 128MB cards with 16 pipelines, but I want a 256MB card.

Here's the specs on the 6600GT
Quote:
Manufacturer XFX
Bus Type AGPx8
GPU Core Speed 500Mhz
Graphics Processor / Vendor NVidia GeForce 6600 GT
Memory Interface 128 Bit DDR
Memory Speed 1000 (500 DDR)
Onboard Memory 256
Package Type Retail
Pixel Pipelines 8
RAMDAC 400 MHz
Supported APIs OpenGL, DirectX
Overclocking isn't an option for me, and I want a card that works with the HDR (HL2)

Re: Which FX Card

Soz guys 2 thing's ere...

How much do you want to spend Root??

Slug - I had a few problems with my GTO so I flashed the bios of my Motherboard and did a complete format & reinstall of my OS, now it works like a dream, you may not need to do that, but id advise making sure the rest of your system is up to date on drivers.

Also did you..

Uninstall all your previous FX drivers & then run a regcleaner app.
Installed the latest ATI Cat Drivers 5.11 + Control Centre.
Set your performance tab in the Control Centre to max Performance
IS AA & AF on??

Re: Which FX Card

Have a look at the Sparkle GeForce 6800GT 256MB, i have seen these for under £200 from Europe & the States.

Also..

http://www.shopmagenta.com/product/SD0GL001A.aspx - i hope i can post this...

just over budget i know - but a great card. Google it you may find some great deals from abroad.

Otherwise the XFX series are great cards, out of the box the 6600GT is faster than the 6800XT and would be fine for HL2, Fear & Doom.
